I was lucky enough to fall into a field of work that I love. I was appointed to serve on the MPA Ratings Board.
Imagine being able to watch and rate films every day! It was great. I rated thousands of films over a decade's span at the MPA. Now I consult to film producers on script rating analysis, on-set/remote consultation, film rating analysis and post-production consulting, MPA submission & negotiation. I was there for a decade and have been an independent fil ratings consultant for the past dozen years with one exception - I just finished a one-year contract with Netflix as a Ratings Policy Specialist. Most of my work there consisted of Quality Control for their original films and I helped out with their original children's series and film as well. It was a great experience - the people, processes and culture were a wonderful fit.
Recently I added Broadcast and Streaming Standards and worked with one network to help clear production inventory. I’ve also performed live/delay Standards for a major reality show. I've added training supervisor to that recurring role. I use the same skills that I honed at the MPA and working as a film consultant when applying Standards issues. I started my Standards work at the Game Show Network and each contract project allows for new colleagues and experiences.
Context understanding is critical in Ratings and Standards work. While it’s obviously important to understand an organization’s guidelines, awareness of cultural and newsworthy trends is key as well. Adapting to an ever-changing landscape is a critical skill that I enjoy implementing on every project.
