I got into voice acting over ten years ago and thought it was all about commercials. It turns out it's not; in fact, narrative stuff like explainer videos, audiobooks, and e-learning are a much larger part of the voice-acting universe. I find narration lots more exciting than short commercial scripts and easier to learn.
I had quite a bit of acting experience, but it takes specialized training for voice-over if you want to do lots of it from your home. You need a home studio, a good mic, a computer, and special software to record. You need to learn the basics of audio engineering.
I'm also a singer. I love voice acting because it combines my love of singing and acting in one space.

Thanks for sharing, Kris Keppeler! Are there specific audio engineering programs that you use?

My pleasure, Ashley. I use a suite of programs, that includes an audio editor, AVS4You. It also has a video editor that I use to put together audition self-tapes.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience Kris Keppeler. Have you done any animation projects?

My pleasure! I have an IMDB credit for a video game, Agony, and I'm the voice of Rose in Losing Rose, a short animated film. I'm currently attached to an animated series project moving forward this year.

Hi Kris. I appreciate you sharing. Do you have a computer for recording/editing, if so what do you recommend, Windows or Mac? Or can you use phone apps? Which ones?

I use my Windows laptop for recording/editing because I am used to Windows. A MAC works just as well. Recording and editing using a phone app might be difficult, but I know some tablet apps might work better.

I'm looking to get a new microphone for recording voice work at my house. What microphone do you use?

I use a Rode NT1A. It's not a high-end mic, but it has a good sound, and it's a quiet mic. It's
recommended for audiobook and narration work.

One of my first jobs was producing radio commercials and I was always so impressed with the talented voice actors I was fortunate enough to work with. It seemed like such a cool job. Amazing how the career has evolved and the opportunities that exist. Thanks for the share, Kris Keppeler!
