Asking for feedback after an audition...

Hi Actors!

It's ok to ask for feedback after an audition, especially if you are starting your career or if you are new in town and you are getting to know Casting Directors. BUT we are usually pretty busy and working with deadlines so sometimes we don't have the time to answer your emails. If you don't get the job, but we call you again to read for us, that means we like you, so don't get discouraged!

Thank you for sharing such delicate information! As an actor, I can appreciate the amount of work you put in.

Stephen Foster

often, actors are only asking for "feedback" for attention and to butter CD's up! LOL

Andrea Thompson

Straight from the horses mouth, thanks Silvana!

Richard "RB" Botto

Fantastic advice, Silvana. If you ever feel like writing a guest blog for us on your experiences as a casting director, just reach out to our Director of Content, Taylor Baker, at Taylor@stage32.com

Thanks for this information and encouragement, Silvana Arias ! I think the other side of that coin has to be we only ask to ensure we don't miss the opportunity for feedback if it's available. Similarly, I've found pleasantries and well-wishes to CD's are always welcome. They get so used to being asked to give attention that when they finally receive attention, they are quite receptive. Thanks for being there for us!

Silvana Arias I heard an interesting perspective on this topic from Bonnie Gillespie, who is also a CD. She said that by asking for feedback, you're asking the CD to remember why they did NOT pick you. Often times, as I'm sure you can attest to, the reasons have nothing to do with your craft. So by asking for feedback, you're forcing the CD to re-watch your read and look for the "mistakes" that they probably never saw in the first place. It's a well-intentioned request by the actor, but it might just backfire. Do you agree?

Silvana Arias

Hi Matthew! I don't agree because it shows me that the actor is taking his/her career seriously and wants to improve his/her craft. Agents ask for feedback all the time. It's something common in this business. Trust me, I'm definitely going to remember the 10 or 20 actors who didn't perform well, but I am going to look forward to see the ones who asked for feedback.
