Only you can answer that for yourself. Try it all. Go to a Meisner class, go to Stella Adler's school and try that out. Try all things. Great painters try many styles and learn all the rules of their craft before finding their style. Experimentation is how we become original. Personally, I like a bit of both in my style.
I guess the best answer I could give is there is no one way. Depends on how the film goes. It could start for people to be "method" then depending on the director it could turn in to "spontaneous" and vice versa. So that's the best answer I could give this question.

I have found that movement helps bring the emotion to the surface. But like Stephen said try any thing and everything. Find what works for you.
