GAMING INDUSTRY: History repeats itself, because no one listens

Whilst I’ve just posted something in the Screenwriting Lounge about the use of AI,

And some say we just have to embrace it, because it’s already a part of the industry furniture, others in the Gaming Industry don’t seem to have listened nor learnt from last year’s strike. Here’s a headline from Screendaily that caught my eye.

SAG-AFTRA calls strike against top video game companies over AI concerns

“We’re not going to consent to a contract that allows companies to abuse A.I. to the detriment of our members,” said SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher.

And so, there appears to be another strike in the offing. What are your thoughts about the union wanting “a new agreement to protect members’ voice and performance capture work”?

When I came to dallas 12+ years ago, I was in Aftra before the merger. The local SAG office had nothing, texas had no incentives ( determined the reason but still people create and film here). SAG did not like AFTRA for some reason and I was treated with disdain, they had nothing and I blame this on the local. I tried to assist but this "disdain" thing had something to do with it and sure that there was a reason before I came to shut the FED's money pump down.

So 30 years worth of skillsets gone in 12 years. They wanted me to join but Texas law is interesting still today don't see them as viable. Since I my view of saving the country based on my research gather for my degree based on my "thesis" then using the city of "Las Vegas" as a real time model for then necessary model for monitoring the financial "Hack" of 2007 (Vegas economy as it is an amusement park or "canary in the coal mine"!

So abandoning my trek to Hollywood, I went to save the country. There is a story in there and it be exploited for stories as there are many in this experience. People have to watch how the market is changing similar to the "silent" films going to talkies" as the technology advanced people in different position had to transition. Some of the stars of silent era make the transition and some did not. Today you have a face with a voice dub you are golden. At least from your agent's point of view.

SAG got reamed out by Ricky Gervais: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXsSEb-nxd8

I am neutral so the post is for explanatory purposes!!!!!!

Once you confuse the situation or allow confusion infighting, there are people watching where market can produce new realities. When I lived in Vegas, there is a story where the IATSE local had stagehands in charge to make the decision not to go for the contracts with the new world of "circ du soleil", it was not going to last. This is paraphrased for what was told to me, do you trust stagehands to run a business for stagehands especially when they have shown to be not have the business acumen for contract decisions, market analysis and heaven forbid understand the industry of the emerging technology. When the Vegas went through it change, hotels went away other people were lazy hating people who had better skills adjusted to the market change. This produced a dramatic change in policy to have conspiracies, collusion and outright "fucking" over members who were there to work, make money and contribute to the local.

Keep your stick on the ice, we're in it for the money, fame and fortune plus the women!!!!!!

I think it's great that SAG-AFTRA wants a new agreement to protect members’ voice and performance capture work, Geoff Hall! I don't want another strike, but I want my fellow creatives to get a fair deal, which includes protection against A.I.

Maurice Vaughan me too, Maurice. Actors don’t need another long drawn-out strike. I’m just surprised the gaming industry didn’t learn anything from the last strike. They certainly don’t want Fran Drescher on their case!

There were grumblings about a gaming industry strike during the actor strike. I knew this was coming, especially using AI in video games. So easy to generate a voice. I hope they do a better job at protecting their members than SAG AFTRA did for the live action actors. It's ironic that Fran Drescher makes that comment now. I don't think she did a good job with the first strike. I don't know what A.I. protections she's talking about. Everyone needs to read your contract. It may be up to the individual to assure their likeness and voice isn't stolen, as it doesn't seem one can count on the Union to do it.

Do union members make proficient local/national executives. The talkies are coming out of the silent era to not just being recorded but created to be recorded. Technology is a tool but who does it really affect. A - F listers and entry level players?
