Acting : How do I even begin? by Felicia Mariah D'Ascanio

How do I even begin?

I moved to NYC about 8 months ago and am finally balancing out as far as having time for work and my passion, acting. I have networked a bit and have been a part of some student films as actor, camera assistance, producer's assistant, etc. and have just been cast in my first lead role in a full-length student film. I am very excited for this opportunity. But, I want to take this and keep moving forward. I went to a community school for about 2 years for theatre and have some experience, but not much to show on my resume. I'm having a hard time even being seen for auditions. And, i'm feeling a little stuck. How do I keep momentum going? I'm thinking of creating projects myself.

Hi, Felicia - My advice, honestly, is to come to the West Coast. New York is the theater capitol of the world, and it sounds like YOU want to do film and television. While there are certainly a lot of television series' shooting in New York, most are (believe it or not) cast out of L.A. Having said that, if you decide to stay in NYC for a while, get yourself into some classes and workshops. While you continue studying, get yourself into more shorts and student films to build up your reel. Once you have a strong reel, start submitting to agencies and managers and see if you can get a rep. Wishing you all the best!

Creating projects for yourself is NOT A BAD IDEA if you are honest. In other words don't put yourself in a lot of schlock just to say you did something. Don't let anything into your reel unless it's the very best you can do. Also, creating projects requires you to network with others. Networking is almost never a bad idea. Work for free whenever you have to but ONLY if you really believe in the project. Always do your best to do your best. If you have any talent at all it will eventually be rewarded.

Shaun, the west coast does intrigue me, but funny enough, I started in theater which is why I made the decision to move to NYC. Film is really a new venture for me which i'm absolutely loving, and I would consider CA in the future. But, for now, I think i'm right where I need to be :) I think classes and workshops are definitely a way to go and I'm constantly getting referrals for new classes and coaching sessions. I can't wait to start up as I have a few open houses coming up to check them out!

Alle, I can see your concern of self-creating and I definitely agree. It is easy to come off as desperate but I also have to say that I feel strongly that I can create an honest piece of work as well, as Patrick mentioned. I love networking and I love working with people, and what better way to do it than to keep myself busy and creating than with a fun, "passion project". Work vs passion is (unfortunately) a constant battle with most people in our field. I do believe that acting takes commitment, but i've aimed to shape my job into something I can mold around my acting career. I make my own hours and work from home, so it really works out. At least, for now, until i'm seeing some great results in my acting world. ;)

Patrick, honesty is key! And I appreciate the positive energy. My reel is nothing now... but I plan on putting nothing but my best work together, once I have something to show for myself. :)

You seem to have the right attitude. I'm sure you're going to do great. Good luck!

Felicia, go to the web site of ESTROGENIUS. They produce theatre festivals -- short plays by women -- & are always casting. Short plays will build your reel. Google Estrogenius (NYC). Also the Annual Fresh Fruit Festival will be casting soon. Go to both web sites and get involved.

Shaun, I appreciate the positive energy! I'll keep chugging along :)

LindaAnn, those are GREAT suggestions and I will definitely be checking them out! Thank you :)
