What you wouldn't do in real life, is too old for film (for women)

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal told The Wrap Magazine that she was turned down for a part because of her age.

I didn't realise how huge those age gaps were in some of those films. I do remember thinking it was unrealistic when watching a few (especially the ones in the 90s or early 2000s) but wow.

There is no AGE LIMIT in one's life....and so in acting........because...life itself is acting

Suzanne Bronson

I know it's shameful isn't it? Surya- I don't know what planet you live on, but 27 yo women do not date 55 yo men unless they are filthy rich, which none of the characters are.

Tony Fisher

I know there have been cases where younger girls go for older men.. but most end up on those sleazy chat shows.

Surya Narayana A

Suzane....any where in my words....did I say or talk any thing about the so called dating ? please re-check it.......amazing that how you raised that issue.....sorry to say that.....still, no issues.....just forget it....we are humans after all

Melonie Zarko

It is odd. 55 years old? I find anything under 35 is rather distasteful to think about - and the actress herself looks a decade younger than her actual age!

Suzanne Bronson

Surya- I guess I just don't understand your comment. no need to get defensive. Nothing is personal

Suzanne Bronson

and I was talking about dating. that's the point.

Not to dismiss or ignore the problem, which does exist of course but I'll bet anything that in her case, that comment had little to do with her age and more to do with her general persona which is ultra quirky. It was probably a sad attempt at a more polite rejection than telling her that her entire screen presence is "just too weird". Which it often is. But in that good endearing ultra entertaining way. Same with Parker Posey. Love em both but they're far too interesting to be a sidekick in the story. They both tend to be scene stealers.

Suzanne Bronson

No. it has nothing to do with Maggie Gyenhall personality and frankly I am offended that you try to dismiss it as such.a lot of actresses have been told the same thing not just her. It was not an attempt to be polite because they didn't like her. Trust me as an almost 40 year old actress I know

Surya Narayana A

At and after 35....the real ife starts......and one really lives up tp 65 or so.....so gentlemen and ladies...never think and feel about the age factor....if u feel u r young in yr mind...means u r young...thats it

Sandra Weston

I have to add a comment here since I didn't start acting professionally until I was 59. http://www.sandraweston.com/#!story/c1va9 Check out our PSA Safer Sex For Seniors if you doubt that life and love go on until the end.

I did say "not to dismiss the problem." haha. So no offense intended there. I know it's an issue. I can't speak to other actresses struggles with it. Gotta be frustrating. Any other actress I'd likely just agree. My point is that Maggie to her credit, in general is far too strong on screen to be a supporting player. She's a lead. Ever see Secretary? That film is the whole basis for the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomena. Down to the fact that James Spaders characters name is stolen. Mr. Grey? I don't think that's a coincidence. It's intellectual theft. Steven Shainberg has gotta be pissed off.

Suzanne Bronson

this has gotten so far off topic I don't even know what anyone is. talking about anymore..

Tina Goldsack

Never to old! I think as a woman we all need to support one another. I will always need a mother or a grandma to play with me. We should all hold our heads up as we age.

Isiss R

LOL Suzanne,you are hilarious

Debbie Croysdale

This is a strange thread, it seems to be an argument about ones status is to be judged by pages on a calendar rather than intellect, talent or personality. Whether aged ten or one hundred the question should be “Did actor pull off character and entertain audience.”
