Always a good sign when films like this get made. What do they have to lose by investing in animation right now especially if it has an anime hybrid style to it. The west's reaction to the more mature styles and themes had been shamefully slow.
Take for example Gobelins in France. They've been teaching their students anime techniques for decades but I still can't name a school in the US that you could be sure to learn the skills you'd need to SURVIVE in the anime industry.

Unfortunately, we can't force a culture to like something. For instance, outside of Japan, Star Wars isn't that popular in Asia.
