AI Animation Reel-Terence Daniels

I realize some of you don't like animation done by artificial intelligence, but I think you will see that it is a useful tool that is capable of producing some really great results. I'd love to get your reactions to this b/c I have been having a lot of fun with it! What have your experiences been with artistic AI?

Mike Boas

Right now it can be an efficient way to summon stock footage style content. Don’t know how it can be used to tell a story, unless you’re using it as a filter over existing content.

Terence Daniels

Thanks for the comments Mike, although I think you may have underplayed the value of being able to summon hours of content. It's true there is a problem with AI character consistency though it has always been possible to tell stories without characters if you can get past the audience desire for instant gratification. This is a problem in society, myself included.

I usually deal in concrete facts when I create for an audience but nowadays the facts are distorted so much that it carries with it the implication and consequences of reality. It takes years to develop as an artist and to know what things about you to exaggerate and emphasize and what to leave off(if Po$$ible).

This gets me into the larger discussion of the direction of art and what AI means for art as we know it. I think we've reached capacity on flying horned horses as a society and need to move on to an even more effective healing practice whether that be in the use of symbols or things that do not immediately reveal their purpose in the composition if at all. All this to reveal to the viewer, audience, what it really means to be human.

Here's my most recent film from Monday, made last weekend. Hope you'll subscribe for more! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtIjyCXvRWU

Mike Boas

well I admit your video was compelling to watch, definitely drew me in. and like with a lot of music videos, presenting a “vibe” is enough.

I still maintain that it would be hard to create a story with the tools as they are now.

Terence Daniels

I do appreciate such a glowing review on a reel I posted. You know, before AI it was difficult to get people to say much more than those comments you left, if anything. So, I appreciate the fact that AI has been able to lift the burden of harsh criticism that can sometimes feel personal stemming from the immediate reactive thought processes of the viewer.

I think with each new tool we should explore what it means to be artificially intelligent. We shouldn't hand our intelligence wholesale over to the machines but use it as a springboard for "out of the box" thinking. Though it may be difficult we are still tasked with designing a story whether that be something the viewer can physically relate to or completely mental or ephemeral that the viewer tells him/herself about who he is or how he lives.

If the tools dictate that we must adapt, we adapt, but we do so with a greater purpose.

Bob Harper

I agree with Mike. The tools are still too rudimentary to create fully realized stories. But the technology is progressing at a shocking rate. Since the launch of this mode of creation last year or so, it has crossed milestones that CG took decades to reach. When Tyler Perry saw the video that Open AI Sora released, he canceled his $800 Million studio expansion because he saw the writing on the wall. Here it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRzzcLvsG8o

Someone recently sent me this article: https://www.thewrap.com/tyler-perry-studio-atlanta-expansion-open-ai-sora/

Hollywood has been out of the innovation business for while now with the "re"'s this or that. It is going to cost human capitol.

Mike Boas

I saw that Tyler Perry story too. as good as Sora is, he must be thinking about where it will be in 5 years. Which is the kind of forward thinking I suppose you should do before spending $800 million!

Bob Harper

Mike Boas Unfortunately, it's going to manifest sooner than 5 years.

Brian Smith

I like the variation in styles. I think anyone who underestimates the impact that AI is going to have in the very near future does so at their peril. Much like how a lot of traditional animators pooh-poohed CGI in the 90s, this will be a tsunami-like shift in the industry, and it will be here before you know it.

Walter Horsting

I am looking to take photo realistic Leonardo.ai to 3D into Unreal for www.mildmanneredmen.com . I argree with Mike Boas, Sora, Stable Image, will change film making.

Terence Daniels

I watch your MMM Promo! Have you ever played GTA IV? Also some Cowboy Bebop and Archer influence in there I think. I've done a lot of experiments with different images and styles and found that the character consistency will be a relevant one even with Sora. With the models we have now we have just enough control but Sora just creates everything. Once its generated, if there is anything off you've waited longer for something that doesn't quite match your intent en masse.

Of course, there are other models coming which supplant the film making process with standardized scene flow formats. I can see a lot of hollow content coming forth, things I think the author wouldn't watch themselves with any longevity or are mostly similar and bot driven. In my opinion, the characters will become more important as this is the greatest leap for AI.

AI must recycle the information its been given and create an environment with characters that are relatable to the culture in the moment. I see mostly memes, superversions and stereotypes. This is where the filmmakers can work, translating in the moment.

I'm actually making the move towards more control of my characters and creating a generic clothing ensemble system with the free version of Audaces Studio for my game and cyberpunk project. I don't plan to go fully AI, I've always enjoyed animating and plan to use a hybrid approach while creating my own characters in 3d as you have done.

Also I've spoken with a JR Horsting on Alignable but lost contact. Are you a relative because he is animation as well.

Walter Horsting

Jr is my brother. Send me your contact information to visionar@comcast.net and we will exchange contact information.

Terence Daniels

Nice talking to you Walter. Hopefully we can get JR on board with some good projects.
