Animation : Film - Game - Both? by Daniel Husbands

Film - Game - Both?

The quality of the cinematics, which is actual gameplay, is almost at the point of bridging the uncanny valley. With the tools becoming increasingly more powerful, and game engines providing real-time rendering, have any of you considered telling your stories in an interactive format instead of linear like a film or series? Or vice versa.

I mean, the cut scene cinematics look insane. It's truly beautiful and I could watch it as an animated series easily. I love video games where the storytelling and visuals are so captivating that they enhance the overall game experience. But I still think that you need to have a story that is supported by the actual game mechanics (and vice-versa). The Last of Us is a great example where the visuals and storyline were deeply cinematic and character-driven, but you were still an active participant in the game and challenged by its obstacles and stakes. I often feel that superhero games suffer these days because the game-makers are too concerned about the story and cinematics and aren't spending the same amount of energy on the gameplay and actual functionality to make it a fun and challenging game to play. The hard, but rewarding, thing about great video games is that both things have to work for them to succeed.

I haven't considered it (telling my stories in an interactive format), but I will now, Daniel Husbands. Thanks for the idea!

That looks pretty good. I think there are still some weight issues that need to be worked out. There were a couple of shots in there when the physics still didn't look quite right.

I like character driven games, such as Mass Effect and some of the Tomb Raider games, where cinematics and gameplay mesh together in a interactive movie kinda way. Ashley Renee Smith your absolutely right that they both have to be top notch to be successful. With the volume of games being created these days they at least have to be good at both.

Same! I love the Tomb Raider and Uncharted games! My favorite franchise is actually the God of War games. I don't even know how many times I've played GOW 3.

Uncharted did a really good job of bringing that film feel to games. Netflix is experimenting with storytelling in the other direction, interactive films. Anyone try it?
