Getting my Animates Series Started

Hello everyone! I have scripted a few episodes of an animated series I am looking to get made. Issue is, I have no idea where to get started in the production stage and I was hoping I could look to this amazing community for assistance.

First: Is there an animation software that is better suited for the type of animation I am looking for? If you take the cartoon; "League of Super Evil" as an example but less cell-shaded, that is the type of animation I am looking for. Reason I ask is because I would like to know what skills I need to look for, when trying to hire animators.

Second: I'm debating if I want to sell the show or retain the rights so I have full creative control. If I was to sell the show, being a new comer, how should I approach this? Or if I was to keep the rights, apart from crowd funding, how else can I hope to fund this project?

Third: Do you have any additional advice you can give in any area of this project?

Thanks for reading and your help!

Kim Allen

Hi Jamie, welcome to the group. You've got some interesting questions so here are some ideas for you to think about.

First: Looking at League of Super Evil as an example, the software package that I would be looking at is Toon Boom Harmony. You could get similar results with Opentoonz (opensource and free) or Adobe Animate/After Effects (build out of the Adobe suite, works good and is the best for Motion Graphics, but my on the top of the list for series production) or TV Paint (used for a more styleize result) Harmony is widely used, is a full production suite from boarding to delivery and a lot of talent can use it.

Second: There is no one right answer to these group of questions. Projects get developed in mant different ways, and it comes back to who you can connect with for the content, what your target audience is and what you hope to achieve. I'd direct you to a couple of discussions about options for being able to get a concept started: have a listen to the story of Stepmates (https://bit.ly/stepmate) who launched their studio with a YouTube series before being picked up by a network, and check out Eric Calderon's channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq-9oN1MCEIT8I3AvmxY1FA) for other helpful advise.

Third: the Stage 32 pitching sessions are a brilliant resource to get in contact directly with executives that are looking for content.

Hope this is helpful

Cheers

What Kim said! LOL! Have you checked out any of Stage 32 Webinars? I think you'd enjoy this one about "How to Develop, Pitch, and Sell an Animated Series for a Streamer or Network": https://www.stage32.com/webinars/How-to-Develop-Pitch-and-Sell-an-Animated-Series-for-a-Streamer-or-Network

Have you begun concept art and character bios? That's always a fun stage.

I knew there was Webinars going on at the moment but I completely missed the animated series one, so thanks Karen! I will be looking at it now. :)

Also the character bios are all complete but I am no artist so I will be looking for someone to take care of that for me.

Definitely start by scrolling through the Animation Lounge - lots of great artists here! Also, a few posts with recommendations for sites about where to find Concept Artists.
