Live action reference is always shot -- has been since Walt days. Story boards are always shot. They just aren't composited split frame. Basically the film goes up many times (usually at least 8) starting with story board through final shots the pieces get cut in as they are complete. So, yes.
Very interesting I can't remember seeing a video showing the reference video side by side. I actually used video reference for hands animations recently myself. Soon to be released video and I will share it on here. My website http://sundstedt.co.uk
