Mixing live action and animation

I'm in the midst of creating a video with the approach of having animation over live action footage similar to the video here: https://vimeo.com/129844269 Aside from the obvious motion track, would the actor need some kind of tracking points for the effect to be pulled off in post? And what are things to consider when shooting? Thanks

Bob Harper

Be careful of foreground elements getting in the way of the animation, which causes masking issues. Give your actors a point of reference for line of sight. Maybe even take a tablet that on set and snap a shot and draw on top of it a rough indication of how the animation will work within the screen. Good luck.

Thank you Bob! Would I need track points as well on my actor?

Bob Harper

Maybe if your actor is heavily interacting with the animation and you also might want to sync movement

Fun video. Well executed. But I found myself wishing that with all the time and effort invested, perhaps more of story would have made it more enjoyable.

Great animation work. Reminds me a lot of this (not that you copied) but you may enjoy it... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwrbyVaC6EU

I just want to be clear that the piece I have attached is not mine. I am simply a fan of the work featured in the enclosed short and was looking for some tips on how to execute it. But I appreciate everyone's generosity and advice that was given!

Ah, my bad! The best bit of advice I can give you is to just dive in (and use youtube – there are millions of helpful tutorials for free on there, you just have to sift around a bit to find the good ones). Other than that, base on the video you supplied, I would suggest getting a good understanding of photoshop, a wacom tablet, and after effects. I didn't know a ton of animation before I did this (https://crashthesuperbowl.doritos.com/video/3392) but those two bits of software + the wacom + youtube made it all possible.

Clearly, you looking at a short but if you want to see an interesting mix of animation and live action in a feature (and you're not familiar with it), look up the film, Run Lola Run.

Great animation work.
