Mold3D Studio to share Slay animated content sample project with Unreal Engine community

For those interested in using Unreal Engine for animation, this should interest you very much. Mold3D Studio recently made a short animated project with Unreal, and they will soon make available all the assets they used for free. This could be a great opportunity to test Unreal for animated projects.

That's cool.

Ooo, I frickin' LOVE free assets - that is a solid marketing technique to get me aware AND talking!

After watching the video, I'd like to ask two questions:

1) The character design is exquisite. Is "design" what Unreal does best?

2) The cinematography is a little lazy for an action/fight sequence, which for me stands out as being a bigger note when it's animation since the director has so much time to plan the shots. One of the thrills of shooting action is keeping the camera rolling for as long as possible. It's only when you want to cover action you couldn't grab that you cut on action. There are more than a few "American" shots/edits that, for me, showed they were not showing off directing as one of its strengths. ***I'm particularly charged about this subject after seeing Shang-Chi which did a great job of honoring both grounded and "wire-fu" martial arts films.

That being said, 'Slay' does play more like a promo for video games which rely more on setting the scene/environment (and those first 2-3 shots of her walking up are definitely cinematic) and selling the "fun" of the game, and we definitely get a sense that this is a fighting game. Would you say this is a symptom of gaming devs crossing over into animation storytelling?

Not a sermon, but I am putting away my soapbox before it becomes one LOL

Unreal is not necessarily the best tool 3d modeling, but with new apps like MetaHuman Creator that could change. You're not wrong about the editing, Karen, but I think the goal is to inspire people to have fun with the assets and make something better. And if you want some crazy Hong Kong action flick editing, watch Hard Boiled by John Woo (and with a young Tony Leung). Even today, the camera shots and the editing are some of the bests ever made for an action movie.

Thanks for posting Christian! We are looking into the Epic Grant for a short film so I'm reading up on all the articles I can find.

You're welcome, Toby! Looks like the new Unreal 5 will be even more amazing for creators.
