Coffee & Content: Cinematic Lighting Vs. Natural Lighting

Stage 32’s founder and CEO, Richard “RB” Botto, shares two great videos in today’s blog.

In the first video, you'll look at the differences between ‘cinematic lighting’ and ‘natural lighting.’ Often what we think of as 'natural' is anything but. However, there are plenty of films that do manage to use natural lighting to their advantage. You'll see the differences and impact to determine how either could work for you and your project.

In the second video, Mark Bone talks about lighting for documentary interviews. Whether you’re working on a more traditional documentary, a piece of journalism, or your typical reality show, all of these require a very specific style for how they interview guests and how they light them for the best effect for the audience.

The key with natural light is to utilize what's existing in a practical manner. Example, if you have a window with light coming through, and someone enters the room, they should either walk through that light or pause there. Whenever I film a project, I always look at a space and see what's currently available as my starting point.
