Lumix GH5S and Steadicam / Glidecam

Hi experts.

I've tried several brands of cheap Glidecam/Steadicam devices on my Lumix and I can't get it to fly correctly.

The camera keeps rotating. I assume it's because the center of gravity is offset due to the tripod mount being offset.

I don't have the budget to get a motorized gimbal so I'd like to make this work, but it's getting frustrating. I know steadicams take a lot of practice but I thought they were supposed to be balanced in all directions of motion before anything else.

Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Landis Stokes

The camera doesn't have enough weight. Once upon a time I was an assistant for a Steadicam operator. He would have various weights AND plates that would help with his counter balance (depending on the camera). Most (weights) were custom made. I know another guy who flies his Gh5s on a Helix (by Letus) and he has also had to modify the counter balance (although it has motors). For my experience, nothing seems to work straight out of the box. I would suggest reaching out to someone who works in metal or looking for other ways to modify it or finding a rig made for DSLRs.

Hi Landis Stokes

So, it's the top end of the rig that is the problem...

I guess I can try sticking lead tape in strategic places, but I should prolly (like you say) do some metalwork on the head to balance the center of gravity.

Hi Kevin Carothers. Yeah, counter balance can be a pain sometimes BUT people figure out creative ways to cope.
