AFTT Trailer 2024

Happy to again be the Composer of the theme of Africa Film Trinidad and Tobago. This is their 10th year anniversary. For this theme I combined African Rhythms and sounds with the National Instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, the Steelpan. My logo as one of the Partners is at the end of the video as well. Edited by Shea Best.

Sam Sokolow

Awesome work, Navid Lancaster! Love when steel drums are used in conjunction with larger orchestration. Very cool!!

Maurice Vaughan

Wow, Navid Lancaster! Incredible theme! I've never heard that combination before. It's catchy! And fantastic trailer!

Ashley Renee Smith

Navid Lancaster, can you talk a bit more about what inspired you to lean into the African Rhythms and sounds for this project? I'd love to know more about your prep and idea phase!

Kerry Kennard

I heard those Brazilian percussion patterns too. - with Surdo and other percussion instruments in there, Navid Lancaster. I did almost a month (2 weeks) learning Samba, so know the feel and rhythms of S. America / Samba percussion music.

Nice arrangement- maybe more Surdo ?? ;-)

K. Kennard

- nope - already finished.

Navid Lancaster

Sam Sokolow Thank you very much. Quick note: I'm from Trinidad and Tobago so we don't call them Steel Drums but Steel Pans - even the large ones.

Navid Lancaster

Maurice Vaughan Thank you so much. It made sense to do it like that since the Steelpan has commonality with African Percussion.

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Navid Lancaster.

Ashley Renee Smith Thank you so much. I have been doing the theme music for Africa Film Trinidad and Tobago (AFTT) for the past few years. Since this was their 10th year I decided to combine two sections of the Steelband Orchestra (Tenor Bass and Tenor Pan) with the African Rhythms of the Djembe with modern Afrobeat drums. As you may know we (Trinidad and Tobago) invented the Steelpan. The voices you hear at the second half of the trailer are voices from my South African Singers samples. Combine them together and you have some very happy Film Festival organizers who use the theme at the start of every screening during the Film Festival.

My African music trailers for the AFTT throughout the years can be found on my blog post here: Enjoy!! https://lancastltd.com/theme-music-trailers-for-a-film-festival/

Kerry Kennard Thank you so much. Unfortunately there are no Brazilian instruments/patterns in this composition. This was all Djembe and Afrobeat Drums with two sections from the Steelpan Orchestra (Tenor Bass and Tenor Pan). I'm from Trinidad and Tobago (in the Caribbean) and it was composed for Africa Film Trinidad and Tobago (AFTT) 2024.
