Inventing Musical Instruments

Hello everyone!

My Name is Simon,I'm a composer of Ambient,Dark Ambient And Soundtracks from Tuscany -Italy since 2009.

There are almost two years that I'm trying to build new music instruments for my music, one of this instruments is the Oliviollin or Oliviolino, this one is a very strange instrument that is able to produce a very disturbung kind of noise : https://soundcloud.com/uzbazur345/oliviolino-only-long-reverb  (you can listen to it on my soundcloud!

There is anyone here that is making instruments like this one?

Oliviolin or Oliviolino is a very primitive kind of instrument, made with two Olive-tree Branches and a Classical Guitar String. Here you will hear it only with a Long Reverb Applied to it. Recorded with a Contact Mic.

That is an awesome haunting sound. I can think of about 50 uses.... However, one of the biggest problems with invented instruments is the lack of musicianship to play it. This is why so many people get into huge sample libraries. But there aren't many producers that no how to create a quality library so a lot of times you end up with one-trick ponies. Which is sad because some of these sounds are really cool....

There's a fiddle that was manufactured a couple hundred years ago (in Scotland, I think) which had a horn attached to help broadcast the sound and amplify. The result was something a lot more hollow and haunting. This reminds me of a similar type of resonator with the bucket. You could probably take that approach and either develop a cello with a the same bucket resonator or integrate the bucket into the bottom of a violin to achieve something that is not only unique but playable by a wider musicianship.

Anyway... Cheers on the unique creation.

Rods Bobavich you're talking about the magnificent Stroh violin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stroh_violin

Of which, by the way, there is a great FREE sample library by the guys at Impact Soundworks: https://impactsoundworks.com/product/the-stroh-violin/
