Composing : Linked In…Yay, or Nay? by Brian Gunter

Linked In…Yay, or Nay?

Hey all! I’m new to Stage 32 and I’m looking forward to chatting with your all and getting to know you! I wanted to get a quick poll and take the repertoire on whether working composers find LinkedIn to be a valuable resource I’ve seen other positions from he film industry, but mostly executives and the like. Interested on your thoughts? Good, bad, ugly, I’m here for it all!

Cheers!

Linwood Bell

I never got any action from LinkedIn. Doesn't mean you can't though!

Kerry Kennard

I find a few executives, though not much connections texting.

I do find others who are writing- some w day jobs, etc and make good friends/ texting & what they are working on.

I had a guy like one of my earlier compositions which was a collaboration w engineer.

Joel Irwin

No action - you are better off getting to executives and agents with IMDB Pro. Gazillions of FB groups for casting and crew calls as well as promotion and networking. I am a member of over a dozen in houston and texas.

Brian Gunter

Thanks all! I appreciate the quick check-in on that!

Brian Gunter

Joel Irwin I’ve got no love for the FB groups out there. Haha. The main composer jobs groups I’ve seen are all barely moderated (if at all) SPAM fests, and IF in the rare instance a director or producer posts for a job you’ve got 6,000 other DMs to compete with so I’m looking elsewhere to focus my attention.

Like right here!

Kerry Kennard

I agree with Joel and Brian.

Some people have suggested looking at producers on IMDBA & contact them - or someone in their office.

I’ve contacted a lot of people on LinkedIn as well, esp people in Executive positions and other people making films / other composers. I have.a good repore’ w one lady who is a composer; some of these are good for helping them and sharing life experiences which is a win-win experience.

hustle hustle hustle...

Van McCoy learned the hustle from me.

Marsy Robinson - I don’t move as fast, ha ha

Alexander Benra

Can someone explain the "hustle hustle" thing to me. I dont get it, maybe because English is not my mother tongue?

Linwood Bell

Alexander Benra To go after work/gigs. My reference to Van McCoy was a joke. He wrote a song back in the '70's called The Hustle and the hustle was a disco dance. I was at one of Van's recording sessions in '73. I was there at the studio recording with Southside Johnny and Van was in after us. I stayed for his session because two friends of mine who were in town playing with Donny Hathaway were on his session. You'd have to be a dinosaur to know how cool all of that is. :) The Hustle record was released in '75.

Brian Gunter

Marsy Robinson Yep, I totally agree. But, for those of us not in a major "hustle, hustle" metro area, like myself, I'm looking for any effective alternative ways to hustle, hustle, hustle! (unless I totally misunderstood the context of your "hustle, hustle, hustle". ;) Thanks for chiming in either way, I appreciate any and all feedback! Now I'm just enjoying saying "hustle, hustle, hustle". Makes me feel like I'm playing football again. haha!

Brian Gunter

Linwood Bell that's hillarious, and rad!

Brian Gunter

Kerry Kennard hadn't considered IMDB Pro as a potential source for cold contact. Thanks for the suggestion!

Marsy Robinson

what i mean by hustle, hustle, hustle is just that you have to work hard to make and maintain relationships with people - gotta be in it to win it kind of thing.... linkedin is an important tool that matters to many executives and helps build your presence.

Brian Gunter

Thank you Marsy Robinson! I totally get it, and appreciate your clarifying your comment. Thank you for your perspective!

Cheers!

Julian Blackmore

Hey Brian, I find it useful as a research and networking tool - finding potential collaborators and learning about them, and maintaining relationships in a fairly low key way. Any jobs that do get posted on there are swamped within hours, so it's not good for that. IMDB Pro probably a better use of your moolah!
