For Composers who (more often than not - including me) have to mix their own creations. What are your thoughts?

I do something similar. I use a Bose SoundLink Micro to check my mixes. I wouldn't call it a Sh*tbox by any means but it's basic enough for my purposes.

I always check things in mono somewhere along the way. I've got a pair of auratones out in the garage. I should probably bring them back in here!

I remember an Engineer in Nashville, TN in his Indie studio doing a test at low and regular volumes. It's a nice way to test your mix / mastering also.
