Filmmaking / Directing : Communication between directors and composers by Brian Gaber

Communication between directors and composers

This is the first time I have posted in a topic other than composing. I am interested in learning as much as I can about how directors communicate with composers. What are the challenges? What things do composers need to listen for when talking to a director? How do you handle approval of the music? Are rough sketches enough to give you confidence that the final product be acceptable or do you need finished tracks to make your decisions? My experience has been that composers and directors speak two different languages. I have gotten myself off track by taking a director’s desires too literally. I once had the experience of doing a rewrite because the director wanted the music to be slower. This lead to another rewrite because, on further discussion, I realized that what he really wanted was for the music to be more simple or transparent. It occurred to me that I need to ask as many questions as possible and not jump to conclusions.

Stage 32 Staff - Julie

Brian, I'm sure we'll get some directors and filmmakers chiming in here, but in the meantime, we actually had a great discussion on this on this month's On Stage With RB broadcast. Just watch the interview with Timothy Andrew Edwards (he's the first interview in the broadcast): https://www.stage32.com/media/1192546734148953455

Julie, Thanks for the advice. I just found it. I am new to the site and still feeling my way around. Any guidance like this is very helpful to me as I hope to become a useful and active member. Thanks again.
