Filming Documentary Interview

Hi! My boss needs to be interviewed for a documentary on Monday July 11th. This is my first experience with a documentary. The topic is AI and tech so it should be modern. If you know of something please let me know the description and what fee is. Any advice on this and what to keep in mind as we shoot is very much appreciated!

Sam Sokolow

Just a few tips - although not sure about the “fee” question. When setting up the interview you want as much space as you can get between the camera and the subject being interviewed and as much space as you can get between the subject being interviews and their background - depth of field makes interviews look best IMO. If you have a background that can include a tech style office setting, computers or any type of AI production aparatus that might be cool. When you reference “fee” do you mean for the subject being interviews or for the free doing the filming?

Debbie Croysdale

I would focus on “their” point of view whether Al or anything else. The interview needs to make audience think/question after absorbing some new revelation. People never remember text book facts in documentary but the characters relation to the subject and how it affects them. Make it unique and personal,

Keep in mind:

1- The purpose of the interview. Is it for sharing information? Promotions? Public Relations? Fundraising? Whatever the purpose, base your questions and supporting content on the purpose of the video.

2- Ask your boss if there’s specific topics they would like to touch on. Prompt them with those specific questions.

3- Choose a background that speaks to the environment you are in. No blank walls. Consider your lighting, sound, and atmosphere.

4- Have fun with it.

5- For fees, ask for a bump (*bonus) of whatever your boss is paying you already. Get paid for the extra time you are putting in.

Just have him paraphrase Elon Musk, he'll be okay...
