Hi guys! So after your amazing support and very helpful recommendations I dared to try and shoot my first short film. It's very amateurish with a lot of mistakes, inconsistencies and flaws, but I put my heart into it, and it's my first! A big deal for me. Scared to share, but here it is -- https://youtu.be/xb-8ODparnY?si=IT1xikldJmCIlkPP Special thanks to my folks who agreed to become actors for a while.

I liked the idea you used to make this movie. But it is problematic in terms of editing and lighting. If you want me to fix it for free, contact me.

Congratulations on filming your first short film, Mariia Rudenko! I like it. What's something you learned from filming the short?

Thanks a lot for your generous offer Ruhollah Ghayem Ruhollah Ghayem ! To be honest, I'd want to leave my first short as it is, to later come back to it and see how I grew haha. I'm very happy you liked the idea! Thank you!
thanks so so much for your support Maurice Vaughan Maurice Vaughan ! First of all I learnt to never shoot on selfie camera. But it was interesting as an experiment. But also:
1) to direct animals is the hardest thing ever
2) I wanna buy a better tripod (the cheap one I had was all the time falling)
3) with time I'll definitely purchase a real camera for beginners and will edit from laptop instead of phone.
here comes the question. What editing software should I get?
4) generally to make a short film is so much fun, but so much harder than I imagined! Especially trying to squeeze it in my already busy schedule of day job, family, studies and few screenwriting projects I'm working on
5) I have so much to learn about directing, light, sound etc.
Another question: are there any libraries with music that I would be allowed to use for my films? Basically where do I take music?
6) I had no idea what screen format I should choose, so I went with auto. But what are people normally choosing? 4:3?

You're welcome, Mariia Rudenko. Thanks for the answer. I'm sure it's really hard to direct animals, especially animals with a lotta energy. Looking forward to your next film!

thank you Maurice Vaughan ! I actually already have three more ideas :) Gosh, if only there was time to realize all of them!

Unless planning to upload to a site that requires vertical orientation, shoot horizontal, 16:9.

You're welcome, Mariia Rudenko. What genres are your other ideas?

Maurice Vaughan one of the ideas is comedy as it would be a sequel to Romantic Evening. In the end there will be a trilogy :)
also I have in mind a drama, a nostalgic drama and a dramedy. the last one’s actors are all dogs, so I’m actually not sure anymore whether it’d be even realistic to film them :)

A trilogy is a great idea, Mariia Rudenko! Just dogs might be tough! Add a cat to make it easier. Haha

actually Maurice Vaughan I did plan to include cats too:) I have 4 dogs and 4 cats. so the actors are there. Just need to stick to their rider haha

my main question is what software for video editing would you guys recommend? Google gives million variants, but what is your experience?

For editing, Resolve is a favorite among many filmmakers. There’s a free version.
Another free software I’ve heard recommended is Shotcut.
I’ve used Resolve, but I prefer Premiere, part of my Adobe subscription.
