Why are shoot days 12 hours?

First time Writer/Director/Producer. Going to shoot in Manhattan NYC (Not Manhattan, Kansas). All exterior/interior scenes. All Union. SAG/AFTRA, DGA, ASC,PGA,ACE IATSE(and any other appropriate craft unions). Want to know the reason for standard 12 hour shoot days. Any links to articles helpful. FYI- It is a copyrighted script. It is 106 pages.

JD Hartman

Straight time, overtime and Golden time. Contractual labor agreements with the unions.

Emile M. Hobo - Thank you for the advice Emile. We live in a world where everything can be "GOOGLED"

JD Hartman -Thank you for that information JD.

Dan MaxXx - Thank you for your comments.

The actual shooting isn't normally 12 hours but you block 12 hours of total work to get the shot as was said above. Lighting, makeup, sound, camera, etc. all before you actually walk the actor to the set and begin to walk through the shoot and then breakdown after that.

Vitaly Kozlov You are going to direct a union feature? YES! What a Joke? I like to laugh. Good wishes on all your future projects. And thanks for the heads up on that guy with the funding.

Andrew Perry

To those questioning him, don't do so here. It is rude and VERY unprofessional! Steven, I wish you the very best, show that anyone can get in the industry if you simply make connections!

Hi Steven, shoots can sometimes be that long. I personally have never done a 12hr shoot, but I've seen that sometimes it all depends on budget, crew and the scenes that you plan on filming that day. It also depends on deadline. When we work on costumes for a project, we mark down the deadline for the customer and a deadline for ourselves. Sometimes a simple costume could take 8hrs, then again it depends on how soon the customer needs the piece by (we've punched out a few last minute costumes/broke night to finish them lol). I've gone to a photo shoot that was listed at 6hrs, but turned out to be 8hrs. I would definitely check around to see why they mark it at 12hrs. Have fun with your shoot!

Andrew Perry

I once did a 16-hour shoot as a student. It was supposed to be 12...

Look, you can work with union actors or non-union actors and be a great director. You can have an IMDb page or not, it has no effect on skill/quality! To equate what I'm saying to an extreme; just because Santa might have a Facebook page, he's still not real! Another example is Hans Zimmer, he has no formal training, yet he has written many hits! Starting with the 1979 classic, 'Video Killed The Radio Star' by the Buggles! (Little known fact) Point is, He could be the best director on the planet, you don't know!!!

Vitaly Kozlov Thank you for sharing.

Finance is a luxury, I've seen perfection from high schoolers! If you need any producing advice, I know a guy who will always answer questions! I'll just pass them right along. He teaches video production and has years of experience, absolutely one of my most trusted sources/assets.

Andrew Perry

You misunderstand, he's talented without a budget.

JD Hartman

Vitaly Kozlov, for crew and cast (even union crew) OT doesn't start after 8hrs. I don't know where you got that idea, but it's incorrect.

JD Hartman

I was talking crew here. My mistake, I put the work cast in my post.

Steven is working under the ULB agreement and unless his first feature is a rousing success, I doubt that he'll be paying the cast anything after permits, food cost, equip rental, transpo, crew payments, etc., etc.

12 is a norm, not a rule. Some shoots are 10, 14, etc by contract or realm ( corporate is traditionally 10 but producers have been trying to change that).

State and Federal labor laws apply to rates at minimum regardless of a quote hourly or daily. A flat rate of any kind has factored O/T within it. Some companies offer a 14 hour guarantee- paid for 14 including the appropriate overtime, but may rarely work 14... 12 or 13 being the norm.

1099s only are legal when the cast or crew person hired has a loan out corporation, whcih is a company set up for the express purpose of selling the services of the person to the production through an LLC. Anyone else goes through a payroll company.

Turnaround is as important as day length. That's related however... travel to home or lodging time must be factored in to avoid a forced call.

SAG and other unions or guilds have contracts that expand n and define all of this.

Why 12 ? Established in Los Angeles, if within the TMZ it was considered the longest work day cast and crew could handle with turnaround for commute and sleep. The commute is often longer now, and 12 often becomes minimum.

Not good.

To all who have shared their experience , strength and hope on this topic I thank you.

Amber Greenlee -Thank you for the link. It is great when someone shares that kind of info. God Bless you.

Andrew Perry- Thank you for the link. Also the kind words of support.

Vitaly Kozlov -Thank you for sharing (Bogart wore a hat like that in "CASABLANCA"- 1942 Warner Brothers)
