Boxofficemojo has lost its mojo

Anyone else remember when Boxofficemojo.com had predictions that were often accurate? They went through that right-wing period with Scott Holleran, and then they went dark mysteriously and now...the weekend predictions are just constantly off. The information is still interesting in terms of what percentage came from 3D or IMAX, etc, but the joy of the horserace is gone.

Not sure if BOM was ever more accurate than now, but it always made for some great bloodsport among the insiders. These days when the studios are counting on things like Cinemascore to make predictions while aggregate review platforms like Rotten Tomatoes hold so much influence over the consumer, it's easy to see how some films fall short of the heightened expectations (I'm looking at you COLLATERAL BEAUTY).

RB it really is bloodsport. Good comment.

Although insiders aren't as obsessed with BOM as they used to be, they are still crazed about projections. Understandable given the ever increasing importance of opening well. I had 2 experiences in 16 where I was hanging with creatives (one screenwriter, one director) on a Friday morning as they waited for that first call regarding box office receipts. Years of work to make the film...Years...And here they were in near nervous breakdown mode waiting to hear if the projections were accurate. It's a wild biz.
