Civil War: will A24's $50 million gamble pay off?

It seems so as the film's box office numbers came in at $25.7 million for its debut. According to Variety, "It’s the first A24 movie to lead the charts in North America, setting an opening weekend record for the New York-based specialty studio. It also marks the biggest R-rated start of the year."

The below video analyzes past A24 strategies, trailers, and video/post comment sections to review what could be in store for the film's overall success.

I'm sure A24's $50MM gamble will pay off, Ashley Renee Smith. I've heard a lot of people raving about it, A24's creative marketing, and "Civil War" made $25.7MM for its debut. I've also been seeing "Civil War" all over Twitter (X). Plus, the movie has things that appeal to different people. It has drama, action, thrilling scenes, the characters (although "Civil War" has big movie set pieces, it feels like a small, personal movie), etc. The movie looks bigger than its $50MM budget.

Hopefully it can get a word of mouth boost to carry it over the next couple weeks. Seems like we're in a lean spring period at the box office. Monkey Man brought in 23M, off a 10M budget. So that's two back to back "gritty" indie movies with big star appeal (Dunst and Patel) that made about the same range of money upon release. Not sure Civil War will make back its budget, but it was a really good movie!

Stephen Folker

Looks like an amazing film!

Craig D Griffiths

I am playing to see it based purely on the poster.

50M good budget. So (I believe), we are seeing the swing back to the smaller budget films. The blockbuster will exist, but it will not conquer like it did. Risk spreading has always been a great strategy.

We don’t have video, which would have been perfect channel and second market for this film, shame that has gone.

I think “spectacle” is fading. We still want big things and striking visuals that tell a great story. Not everything should hold the outcome of the universe.

I think is an obvious hit. It will get a good run. It will make its money back. It will drive more money into smaller films.

What we will see is less opportunities for new faces. They will want to leverage free media. A cast or story the news will talk about.

The screenplay is horrible and project will sweep the Razzie Awards, for sure!

Pat Alexander

Jed Power i didn't think it was bad. it was a much smaller and more focused story than the scope of the marketing would have you believe. but it wasn't horrible by any means. it's a good watch with some #nice moments. a few derivative moments too, but at this point, what filmmaker isn't a little derivative in their movie?

Debbie Elicksen

Ashley Renee Smith Do you think maybe the big budget superhero movies have run their course? As a rabid Marvel Avengers fan, I admit I haven't bothered to see anything after Quantumania and Love and Thunder. They almost all feel like Halloween 13 by now.

Ashley Renee Smith

I think that the quality has dropped a bit and that's made it difficult to get excited about them, Debbie Elicksen. You know that I'm a pretty die-hard comic book geek and even I chose to skip seeing The Marvels in theaters. Instead, I waited to watch it on streaming. I enjoyed it quite a bit and found it pretty fun, but I'm glad I didn't rush out and spend the money to see it right away. I don't think they've run their course, but I think they need some new energy. If it's the same old tired format that anyone can predict, then it's going to feel stale at this point and disappointing to anyone who went out of their way to see it.

Jed Power “The screenplay is horrible…” Okay, Jed you got my attention. Please can you tell me why you think this? I thought considering the genre, it flew straight down the fairway of dystopic stories.

Jed Power

Hi Geoff, Besides being partisan, Dialogue, Characters, locations, etc. were unbelievable!

Geoff Hall

Jed Power oh, I saw the film with my son and we didn’t think any of those things.

Ashley Renee Smith

Thats interesting that you felt that way, Jed Power. I haven't had a chance to see it yet but I've been hearing that they went out of their way to make the division within the nation so different from our current political landscape so that it wouldn't be seen as partisan. Such as having Texas and California united in the Civil War.
