Distribution : Independent Self Distribution by Christine Yoo

Independent Self Distribution

I am independently self-distributing my new feature film, WEDDING PALACE. It opens in theaters September 27 in LA, NY and Hawaii. Working independently, though more work, is definitely a decision and path that I am glad I took. Though it took a lot of time, energy and research to investigate, it's so far been a rewarding experience and empowering. I really highly encourage more independents to go for it and make it happen! Hope you enjoy the trailer and will support the opening weekend of the movie! First theater listings came out today! Thank you! http://www.laemmle.com/films/37293 http://www.cgvcinemas.com/movie/detail.asp?mov_id=216

Hi Christine, We are starting our own Network called, Beacon Entertainment Network, which will be seen through Wisecast Television, and if your interested we can have your feature film, Wedding Place, seen on our PPV or OnDemand Channel.

Nelson Jacobsen

Would like to talk about retail distribution of this project. Let me know if you've considered it.

Christine Yoo

Bianca, thanks for reaching out! Working with a distributor for the VOD windows, premiering Jan1. Would love to find out more and perhaps working something out.

Christine Yoo

Nelson, yes, that sounds great. Yes, I've considered it and have a non-exclusive arrangement with a DVD distributor, so open to hearing what you have in mind.

A HAPPY UPDATE ON THIS POST: This past weekend I had a wonderful OMG moment. I found out out the trailer is leading my idol Director Wong Kar Wai's THE GRANDMASTER at AMC Empire in Times Square!

Ed Vassallo

Congrats indeed. You persistence is commendable. I will support you film in NYC. I am a producer and a friend of Steve Park. Seriously, kick ass for sticking with it in this climate of indy doom distro wise.

Christine Yoo

@Ed - thank you very much for the support!! I really appreciate it. Since completion of the film the whole climate of distribution of independent films has changed so much and there have been struggles with those who always want you to settle for less, ie, skip theatrical. But I just always envisioned the movie providing a fun theatrical experience for the audience and so... I guess there it is. Thanks for your post and reaching out.

Ed Vassallo

No problem. PLease keep us posted with links and I will tweet and FB the heck out of it. Bravo.

Christine Yoo

Thanks Ed!!!!! For the trailer and theater listings: www.weddingpalacemovie.com

Many people ask me why I chose to distribute WEDDING PALACE myself into theaters. These are the reasons why: Cast & Target Audience: Despite the fact it's 2013, Hollywood and even 'art house' distributors felt the film was too niche because of its Asian American/Asian cast. Yet, having done Census Demographics research, I discovered that Asian Americans spend 35% more on entertainment fees and admissions than the total population and they are opening weekend movie goers 6% more than the total population, according to Neilsen.com in their Spring 2011 report. But because of the relatively small overall numbers of Asians in the US, traditional distributors don't understand the viability of this market. But from a cost perspective, marketing to Asian Americans is cost effective b/c Asians are clustered in just 7 of the top 10 media markets, are considered to be consumer trend setters, and are the most wired consumer demographic. The film enjoyed great success in Asian American festivals, college campuses, corporate screenings, etc. so we built a very strong grass roots audience that has remained loyal to the film and active fans. Social Media: Further, I discovered when we released the trailer last year through our Facebook page, [http://www.facebook.com/weddingpalaceGO] the fan base was immediately global and not even Asian. With the global popularity of Korean entertainment content (Kpop, Korean FIlm and TV dramas), I found the Wedding Palace fan base to follow the exact same global pattern as Korean entertainment. That meant a lot of LIKES from all over S. and Central America, SE Asia, India, and the MIddle East. From my own personal experience from screening the film in festivals, we found that Hispanics and African Americans really liked the movie, as well as Caucasians. But it was still stunning to see that 32% of our Facebook fans sited Spanish as their primary language. Also, looking a bit deeper, culturally, Asians and Hispanics share a lot of similarities culturally. But then again, I think everyone can relate to a wacky family! Test Screening Results: I conducted bonafide market test screenings, primarily to test the non-Asian audience response, which I filmed, both their reaction during the screening, and conducted 2 separate focus groups, and did a questionnaire. The film performed excellent to this crowd. But despite all of this quantification, I was still having a lot of trouble, getting traditional distributors to see the market value. Yet, when I spoke with marketing people, every one of them encouraged me to do it on my own b/c they said I had built a viable plan. After setting up my ancillary rights - VOD, DVD, airlines, TV, etc, I decided to tackle the theatrical myself. It is hectic, but hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be. Plus I'm sorta getting a geek thrill too, from mailing out my trailers and posters to the theaters and engaging the theater managers, etc about the upcoming opening. I just felt in the end that my organization was prepared to do a better job, and knew what theaters to place this movie in to best serve the film's audience. Hopefully if we have a strong opening weekend, we'll be able to expand!!!! Thank you everyone for your comments!

Hey Milt is it true you cant get a film into China inless its 3d? Tnx

Milt Barlow

No that not true Mark. Distribution of Western films into China is not impossible but difficult - censorship /quotes' etc However it does not have to be 3D Cheers Milt

Patrick Coker

Hey Christine, I caught your film today. You guys did a good job, a fresh take on an old story. Congrats.

Christine Yoo

Hi Everyone, thanks for all the comments here. Have a few updates. Wow, theatrical was very tough road, with basically no advertising. So far on max 6 screens at any given time, we've managed to gross over $60k, box office wise this is hardly spectacular, but considering we did not have any advertising minus social media, it was not bad. What is frustrating however is that in Hawaii, we are still going strong on the 2 screens we opened on, and we will be entering our 6th week there and have been asked to expand in this market. Well, this is the result of having real commercial advertising in this local market. So to see how the film could perform WITH advertising, and then see the results of how it performed WITHOUT advertising on the continental USA, a huge difference. In Hawaii, we've grossed more than 1/2 our earnings on just 2 screens. If I had the P&A funds to replicate that, it's great to imagine... on the next one I guess. Overall positive audience response from the film. Even had people send me mail thru Facebook that they had seen the film 4 times at the movie theater! And no.... have no idea who this person is. Every filmmaker likes it when people enjoy their movies, and I'm no different. I made the move to hopefully impart some joy into peoples' day, so glad it could happen for people.

OH! And GOOD NEWS TO SHARE WITH EVERYONE!!!!! On a very low day I was having during the release, I got a call that WARNER BROTHERS picked up the cable VOD distribution of the movie for the USA! It'll hit the street Jan 7, along with digital VOD and DVD! And I also got news that the film is making its first airline sales!! And will hit the skies in December! I will be at AFM. And am seeking more opportunities for global sales there. Any leads you may have in this area would be fantastic! Thanks again everyone here for your support!
