The Road to Distributing Your Film Is Not as Hard as You Think

The one issue producers and directors avoid, until the last possible moment of their filmmaking journey, is distribution. The “dreaded” D word. They put it off because it seems so maddingly complicated. Or they secretly hope some distributor will swoop in and make some fantastic multi-million-dollar deal — and never have to think about it again. Great advice in this article from The Wrap: http://www.thewrap.com/road-distributing-your-film-not-hard-you-think-11...

Like a good blogger, this guy hasn't actually given much info on the subject, but he does start to point you in the right direction. Yes, it's complicated, but so is VFX, orchestral composition, cinematography, acting and all the other jobs we have to know in this business. As a past customer and raving fan who is not involved in any way financially, I recommend Jason Brubaker's distribution course at http://www.howtosellyourmovie.com/ if you want to learn more about this. I have studied Internet Marketing principles in many different places and Jason's course is spot on. Good luck out there, everybody!

Filmmakers should always reverse-engineer their films, starting first with identifying their target audience and who distributes to that specific audience.

You're right Shannon, Distribution IS the dreaded "D" word. But anyone can improve their odds of success by navigating the roadblock of Distribution through networks such as this one on STAGE 32. The more people you know in the film business, the better your chances of finding that one company that can help get a film to market. Take a look at http://blackwolfmediagroup.com -- Help is out there.
