Hey Everyone. I am looking to understand what feature film genres consistently sells in the US and overseas. What makes that particular set of genres sellable and why? I am writing my first psychological thriller and i'm curious what the market is for something like that. I'd also like to see if i can write into a genre that is selling. Thank you! (as detailed as possible)

In the past, I've always been told it's horror and thriller. But other genres do sell too. The real question is, will you make enough money to be profitable? For vast majority, it's a no. So, make what you want, but keep your budget low enough you can make something back or make more art.

I second Stephen Folker's response. First and foremost, pull an idea from your soul that you CARE about. Try to find a genre that has the potential to do well worldwide (horror, thriller, sci-fi, action). Then write to your strengths and try to contain the scope of the movie. If you spend $25k making your movie, you will likely make that money back w/in 18 mos if you market it well (poster, trailer, social media). Keeping costs in check, smaller crew, more limited locations, is the key IMO.
