Introduce Yourself : Arnie S by Arnold Schrager

Arnie S

About seven years ago my left brain got tired of me and stopped working. Can't blame it, I've had my share of disappointments as a writer, but one still has to pay the rent. Then I read an article in LA Mag about Background and I decided to make money as an actor. As ridiculous as that sounds, it actually paid off and I'm now a member of SAG.. I love being on Film/TV sets, and being part of an artistic creation. I've been on so many shows and watched the best of our industry produce their visions. It was an eyeopener to me to experience how much rewriting occurs on set. What we as writers finish is only the beginning. Actors take our words so much further than we might realize and why wouldn't we improve our work at every moment we can. I'm writing again.

Great to meet you, Arnold Schrager. I agree ("It was an eyeopener to me to experience how much rewriting occurs on set"). That's why writers are needed on set. I've heard writers talk about that since the strike started.

What are you writing? INFRASTRUCTURE?

Arnold Schrager

My focus now is on "Ha Ha You're Dead" the title is based on the "Greenday" song which is inappropriately performed at a funeral by the deceased's granddaughter. I see it as a half hour comedy. My second focus is on "Inside Castro's Bunker," based on the memoir of General Rafael Del Pino, the highest ranking military defector from Cuba. I'm a friend of the family. Amazing people. It appears to me that we have been fed a belief that after WWII, the Cold War became the primary world event. Upon reading the general's work I now understand that The World Revolution occurred when the European Empires collapsed which in reality is much more interesting than the competition between the US and USSR. Anyway, my completed screenplay and proposed series takes the World Revolution from Fidel Castro's favorite general's perspective. Since the general was in Vietnam, Syria, Nicaragua, Angola (he was also a hero of "The Bay of Pigs" and Fidel's Air Force advisor during the Cuban missile crisis) and just about every hot spot of this period the story gives a world perspective never before seen. Of course now the writers are on strike and as a SAG member I will probably go on strike on 6/30. Sent in my strike authorization yesterday. It's a fight we all have to win.

Maurice Vaughan

Telling the World Revolution from Fidel Castro's favorite general's perspective sounds interesting, Arnold Schrager. I think that's one of the best ways to come up with ideas: looking at stories and seeing which secondary characters would make great main characters.

I've seen a lot of actors voting yesterday and today. Can you imagine a WGA/SAG-AFTRA/DGA strike?

Sydney S

Nice to meet you!

Arnold Schrager

A general industry strike. I don't think it's ever happened. But, if AI can write a blockbuster (as is claimed) and AI can reproduce actors after they're scanned (I was scanned on one of the new Star Wars sets) why do they need us? Of course they do, but the money interests only see the next bottom line. It's a scary time.

Arnold Schrager

And I don't think we can rely on the audience to protect us.

Maurice Vaughan

It is a scary time, Arnold Schrager. That's why it's important for us to stand up now before AI gets out of hand. I read a scene that was written by AI, and it was terrible. Terrible.
