Introduce Yourself : Hello to Everyone by J.R Meek

J.R Meek

Hello to Everyone

Hi Stage 32 Community,

My name is J.R and I am an aspiring screenwriter. I’m originally from Kentucky. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Arts with double emphasis in Film Studies and Theatre. Now, I’m currently residing in Oregon.

I came across Stage 32 from Lee Jessup and joined to help me understand more about the industry and improve my writing.

My favorite genre to write is fantasy, mostly medieval-esque or dark fantasy. What I like to do with fantasy is also incorporate a theme that becomes central to the story. I’ve written a few pilots for TV series and currently writing up my first feature-length screenplay.

If any creatives on the site that would like to collaborate (or connect and talk film), that would be fantastic!

Oregon is one of my college football teams, J.R Meek. Go Ducks! How's your first feature script coming along?

J.R Meek

Oh yes, the Ducks are a great team. It’s coming, I’m still writing through Act 1 and working out the beginning

Debbie Elicksen

I admit J.R Meek when I first saw "Ducks" in your response, I immediately thought of Anaheim and the NHL. But yes, the Oregon Ducks -- in fact, I stole a photograph of their coach's office for one of my Zoom backgrounds. It's my dream office.

Maurice Vaughan

The Ducks uniforms are insane, J.R Meek. Cool. I think my favorite part of a script is Act 1 because I get to set up everything. What's Dark Fantasy?

Preston Poulter

Since you enjoy fantasy, you might like my sexy comic story based on the only D&D adventure to ever be banned by its own publisher.

J.R Meek

Maurice Vaughan the example I have for dark fantasy is The Witcher. It’s fantasy that deals with heavy subject matter that is only suitable for adult audiences. Light fantasy like Harry Potter or Lord of The Rings (maybe) that deals in subject matter that is suitable for all audiences.

J.R Meek

Debbie Elicksen Yes, I keep forgetting that there are multiple teams with Ducks as their name, I’m just attuned to football. Oh wow! I know, I wish I could have an office just like that

J.R Meek

Preston Poulter Interesting. I’ll check it out. Did the publisher give their reasons for why they banned it?

Maurice Vaughan

Oh ok. Thanks for explaining, J.R Meek. I just looked up some more Dark Fantasy movies, and one article says "Edward Scissorhands" is a Dark Fantasy. It's been a long time since I've seen that movie, but I do remember it dealing with heavy subject matter that's only suitable for adults, like being looked at/being treated a certain way because a person is different. Well, that's suitable for teens too

Preston Poulter

J.R Meek TSR, the then publisher of D&D, never provided an official statement. Jean Wells, the author, said she was called into Gary Gygax's office and asked, "Why did you put S&M in a children's book?"

J.R Meek

Maurice Vaughan It depends on the teen. Ratings and suitability is subjective, it really depends on the individual. I know a lot of kids including myself where we watched movies meant for adults.

J.R Meek

Preston Poulter That would make for a funny answer from the author.
