I have won some awards already in Taiwan, but English scriptwriting is a completely unknown field to me. I hope I can be a good student to learn more and make some new friends here from now on.
PS. If anyone is interested in writing scripts in Mandarin, please feel free to pm me as well lol
Great to meet you, Yu-Chen Kuo, and welcome to the community! Wow, congratulations on already winning awards! What kind of genres do you like to write?
I once had the experience of working with what amounted to half a script that had been translated from French with what amounted to a French English dictionary and a grammar book. It was written by a French speaking Swiss writer. This taught me a great deal and leads me to suggest that beyond learning as much as possible about the nuances of the English language and whatever culture that language is connected to (Australian, New Zealand, America, Canada, England) you might also consider a co writer who's native language is English. (I am guessing its not your first language but if I'm wrong I do think the cultural aspect still applies)
Karen "Kay" Ross My own favorite is to write a mystery or suspense story, how about you?
Tabitha Baumander You are right lol
English isn't my first language, so it's pretty hard for me if I wanna write in English... Maybe I should try your suggestion, but this partner may also need to know some Mandarin right?
A quick off-topic question. What are the people around you saying about the invasion of Ukraine?
Some people talk like a jerk, but most people are very kind and anti-war.
Welcome Yu-Chen Kuo! I have a brilliant screenwriter friend (made on this very website) from Malaysia who may have some insights to share around working in English as a second language. If that's something you're looking for advice about drop me a message and I can connect the two of you (though to be honest if you're already winning awards in Mandarin it sounds like you're doing a great job and should keep doing what you're doing. Directors like Bong Joon Ho and Guillermo Del Toro are a good advert for starting off in a native language and then possibly switching to English later on if you'd like to access the mass market, it doesn't have to permanently be one or the other unless you want it to be).
