Introduce Yourself : New but Driven by Dan Black

Dan Black

New but Driven

Hi everyone! My name is Dan Black. I am a budding filmmaker fresh from film school at Montclair State University. Being in the programs there allowed me to connect with so many different people and work on lots of different projects both in front of and behind the camera.

I tend to lean more into writing and just completed my first spec script off an idea I had about a year ago. I also gravitate towards the horror genre and my screenwriting professors praise my unique and new creature and supernatural characters. But I look for the beauty in horror. I often say I don't make horror, I make dramas with tension, trauma, psychological torture, and some ghosts or monsters thrown in. I focus on characters and try to create believable people who you can see living full lives with complex backgrounds and emotions.

I think the biggest challenge I face as a writer is getting my work out there. I have ideas. Perhaps too many ideas. I'm currently involved in a screenwriting challenge hosted by NYC Midnight and booking pitch meetings left and right. Always looking to collaborate and if you wanna read a script or two, check it out. I've got plenty and they'll be up here soon enough! For now though, loglines.

Hey, Dan Black. Congratulations on finishing your first spec script! I gravitate towards Horror too.

Stage 32 is a great place to get your work out there. Here are some blogs about networking I suggest checking out: www.stage32.com/blog/tags/networking-41

Dan Black The term is "elevated horror". If what you're writing is similar to Talk to Me, Swallow, Midsommar, Get Out, The Babadook etc. A24 is pretty good at this. Check out their catalogue.
