Hey, Writers!
I was just watching this great video where author, Sara Cannon is sharing her 10 steps for brainstorming and developing a new novel idea.
Do you have any tips of your own that help you brainstorm at the very start of your writing process?

I like Sara's mind map idea, Ashley Renee Smith. I almost always start with the logline when I outline a script. It's a lot easier for me to outline if I know the logline. I also break my outline into sections (Summary, Characters, Beat Sheet, and Extra/Other Stuff, and sometimes Location if the location is really important).

I love a good mind-mapping session, Maurice Vaughan! I'm the kind of person who needs to get all of my ideas out on paper so that they stop floating around in my head. Once I do that, it's so much easier for me to start organizing those thoughts and figure out what to do with them.

I'm gonna do a mind-mapping session, Ashley Renee Smith. Probably with a short script to test out the mind map.

This is one of those times where I will use Ai tools to generate a bunch of ideas. I don't do that to have Ai choose for me, I use it instead to get my mind thinking of things. It used to take me a long time to come up with an idea ; this shortens the process for me a lot.

I really like her tips Ashley Renee Smith and the story map idea. It's hard to pinpoint how I come up with an idea when it's usually a really small thing that is at the core of the story that just hits me. But most of the time, it's a life experience. If I look back at my life I can typically hone in on one thing that happened and work something around that. So with Jupiter Chronicles it was growing up in a single-parent family. Then asking questions like, "How did that affect/mold/redirect my life path?". Place the setting on a different world and that's when the worldbuilding gets out of hand. LOL.
