Generally speaking, the protagonist is the person whose life is turned upside-down due to some extraordinary, life-changing event, and he/she needs to fight antagonistic forces that will eventually call for a final decision.
Kind of a random seeming choice of words based on relevance, is the giveaway. It is pretty cool stuff and some of the cloud based chat-bots would blow your mind. Anyway, this is way off topic... maybe something for the Transmedia lounge??? Hmmmm, AI's taught by user/fan interaction to generate (or steer) content. Wow, I've just knocked myself for six. Like that AI rapper that got banned from socials for manifesting really disgusting behaviour -- learned from its fans. Oh dear!
"AI's taught by user/fan interaction to generate (or steer) content." Like users/fans tell the AI what story to write and the movie gets made right on the spot, Morgan Aitken? I can see that working for Animation movies or movies with 100% CGI.
There is a mystery to the whole creative performance - and as writers, we may tend to 'design' our characters. I feel mine tend to pop up in my head - but then I guess my subconscious has been at work, filtering and processing, painting and polishing in the background - and I'll still probably 'adjust' them as I go along. The random character generators can be fun to play with - and can come up with stimulating stuff! (random example: ' Very accident prone, Likes to burp the alphabet. Afraid of: technology, and the dark). AI is intriguing. Would like to play with it some more....
Sparkle Sybil Taiwo I would add that the protagonist is your main/central character, the 'hero' of the story (even if they don't behave like heroes), the character who leads the story. If you're following the 3 act structure, your protagonist will likely follow the Hero's Journey (they're called to action, they overcome obstacles, and are usually transformed in some way, before making it back home with the 'reward' or achievement they set out for).
As for design:
Some writers draw on people around them, or characters from mythology, or a combination of the two. Like I mentioned earlier, it might be a subconscious process. I guess the fundamental question to ask if building from scratch is : what does this character need to do? What do they need to be like in order to do it (i.e. what skills/characteristics)?
Julia Warren "...as writers, we may tend to 'design' our characters. I feel mine tend to pop up in my head." I do both. I outline/design my characters, then as I write the script, new characters pop up. The same thing with my storylines.

What do you mean by "And how is this protagonist designed in such an enigmatic performance," Sparkle Sybil Taiwo?
Maurice Vaughan I can provide a two letter answer to your question:
> What do you mean by "And how is this protagonist designed in such an enigmatic performance,"
AI

Artificial intelligence, Morgan Aitken?
One word, Maurice: Yes
Could also be machine translation, but given that so much of that is driven by AI, I think AI is a pretty safe bet.

I'm not sure how "And how is this protagonist designed in such an enigmatic performance" ties in with AI, Morgan Aitken.
