This is a great breakdown (and hilarious), @Ashley Renee Smith. There's some great CGI and bad CGI in "The Flash." As I watched the video, I thought, "Why would a big-budget movie like this have bad CGI, and why didn't the studio get it fixed?" but then they talked about why starting at 13:20: Effects houses being pitted against each other, having to do the CGI cheaper and faster, and notes from the top.

Maurice Vaughan, thats one of the reasons why I wanted to share this video. It's easy to pick apart bad CGi, but there are a lot of complicated elements that are going on in the background and the more people know about how that side of the industry works, the more we can balance our critiques with understanding for the time that these artists put in. VFX is an art-form just like any other and it takes a great deal of talent, practice, attention, long hours, etc. to pursue that career path. I'm blown away by VFX artists, even if the final product doesn't turn out as strongly as everyone would have preferred if they had all of the necessary resources.

You're right, Ashley Renee Smith. VFX is an art-form. I didn't know so much went into VFX until I saw this video. It sounds like VFX is HARD.

In the video (starting at 13:48), Jordan said the shareholders don't care about CG quality, but I think if a movie has great CG, it'll help draw both people to the movie. Bad CG can really turn people off from seeing a movie. It has for me.

Whenever people complain about "bad CGI" they're usually talking about bad 3d modeling/animation. Reminds me of when people ask me why the VFX in older movies looks better than today's. It's because a lot of times when people work on a shot, it STAYS that shot so everyone's effort can be towards THAT SHOT, but sometimes the people in charge see the gag and add more gags and more shots but don't change the deadline so things get compromised.

Great share! Thanks @Ashley! It's so true for all of film/TV, people find that ONE THING to rip a project, but it takes HUNDREDS of people to make a film happen, especially when it comes to projects that feature so much VFX!

Sam Sokolow

Great point, Kenneth Lui - the workflow has a lot to do with the results. But VFX are so prevalent now that it's easy to judge instead of being awed, which I usually am :)

Here's an article I just watched last night and it's dead ass accurate. Reminds me of a time when I was at this one studio and right in the middle of the show, they let us know were on for "12/6's" (12 hours days, 6 day weeks) which you're like "hmm, more OT I guess" but you do miss dinner with your family. It's an awful work/life balance which is why I'd look up and see more single unmarried folk on a lotta shows.

Awesome share, Kenneth Lui! I was just rewatching Attack of the Clones the other day and talking about the effects. This was so interesting!
