Finding Tricky Sets / Filming Locations

Hi everyone! I'm producing a short film and I'm wondering if you have any suggestions/resources for where to film in locations/sets that are a bit tricky. We have a few scenes that take place in a house (easy) but the character is essentially a hoarder. We are on a limited budget so I'm trying to find a way around filling someone's house with a ton of junk. Is that the only way to go about this? Ready to put in the work either way but wanted to see if anyone had ideas. Thank you!

Peerspace.com. Reach out and talk to them. I have found those on Peerspace to be fabulously accommodating!

Hi Samantha, congrats on the short film! I recommend checking out peerspace for a house location that will allow you to put a bunch of stuff in it. A great majority of the renters on peerspace rent out space for filming/photography purposes and the prices are affordable for indie budgets. If you end up with a location that needs some hoarding up, I suggest looking for a set designer/dresser if you can afford one.

Thank you both for the suggestion! I will check that out ASAP!

Find a couple of Appraisers in your area that do foreclosure appraisals - some of those houses already have more junk in 'em than you can carry. See if you can gain access before the clean out crew arrives.

Doug Nelson That is a fantastic idea! I knew someone on here would have a creative solution. Thank you!!

Samantha, if you were in or near NYC, I could help you find just such a location, however, you are in L.A. I do know a lot of people in L.A., but they likely wouldn't let you fill their houses with junk - LOL. All of the above solutions will probably help you. My brother is in Real Estate, so I know Doug's suggestion could turn out to be a gem for you. Also, you could rent a hotel suite for one day/night and mess it up - just make sure you have enough PAs and producers to clean it up, afterward and leave it in the same fashion you found it- LOL. There are definitely creative ways to accomplish your goal. Is your short fully cast? And, when do you plan to shoot again?

Have you thought about pre-fabricating fake set pieces with junk, cardboard, papers, etc. attached. Position several of these to camera.

I am in the Chicago area Samantha. The reason I asked is because I reside in a very small town of only 300 residents. . A farm field lines my property of 2 acres. My home is 103 years old and pretty unique, I was not what the Sypnosis of your production and shoot location was ? I was trying to help ya out bud. Best on your production Samantha. Sincerely, Danny

Hundreds of stacked empty cardboard boxes from the liquor store with a bit of added dressing all over to sell clutter. Dust it up and haze the room.
