25 Iconic Character Descriptions - plus free scripts

Here’s the details on some of film’s most iconic characters.

You’ll notice the economy of effort!

What is your favourite? I had to laugh at Ripley’s for Alien!

Plus, there’s some great free scripts. I’ll be downloading Silence of the Lambs, for sure.

Nick Waters

Travis Bickle....so well done.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Ripley...when her name is all you need.

Maurice Vaughan

Thanks for sharing, Geoff Hall. My favorite character description is Hans Gruber or Jack Sparrow. They're both short and unique/they stand out.

Sam Sokolow

What a great article! Love seeing how these brilliant writers bring some of my favorite characters to life on the page. Apollo Creed was aweaome. Han Solo too. So cool!

Stephanie Munch

Oh I almost missed your post, thanks for sharing Geoff ! Epic! I'm keeping this one in my favorites - how can a description in a script tell so much of a character in like, two lines (or two words for Ripley)? I love it.

And don’t forget to get your free scripts!

Geoff Hall I picked up a few. ;o)

Leonardo Ramirez 2 I was most interested in Silence of the Lambs. It looks to me like a shooting script and not the initial production script. But at least I can check out the language and cadence of the script. So far, some of the scene descriptions haven’t had that sense of foreboding and gloom that I expected. We could put this down to economy of description, or perhaps the talent of the Director, Jonathan Demme to translate its tone into mood.

Geoff Hall Also curious as to how much creative grace he gave to the actors. I haven't read the book so it's possible the director encouraged them (and himself) to draw from that.

Leonardo Ramirez 2 the famous conversation between Clarice and Lecter had the actors speaking ‘to camera’ and not to one another. People thought he may have blown it, but when they saw it cut together, they were wowed at its intensity.

The famous ‘biting’ reaction was an improvisation, that freaked out Jodie Foster.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Geoff Hall That would freak me out as well.
