So, I thought that I would start prepping for my next script which was supposed to be a biopic about an abolitionist but am stuck... I have this beat sheet done for a horror movie that I think would be great however, I've never written a horror movie. What should I do? Should I work on the biopic of which I want to lure Will Smith or should I write what's popular and take a plunge and follow the trend with the horror flick?

Hi Anthony McBride - seems less like a "which to write" and more like a "which to write first". If you are leaning toward the potentially more commercial horror genre, then go for it and know that your historical biopic can come next. I've developed several historical projects and they can take more time but they are historical now or later so they also are never irrelevant.
I recommend Sean Keller's webinar HORROR SCREENWRITING 101 - he really breaks down how to write a great horror script: https://www.stage32.com/webinars/Horror-Screenwriting-101

I’m not sure what your horror idea is, but an abolitionist forced to stand up for their values in the face of some deranged “ fugitive slave act” bounty hunter…or guide some people who are on the run
that would be badass.
Im writing something about some settlers in fictional New England who try to start a life west of Mass Bay Colony who encounter a group of native Americans who try to warn them about a monster that lives in a lake. most of the movie is about xenophobia /prejudice colonialism, ritual magic and shamanism, but when the monster shows- shit gets wild. of course-

Stories are about people. This is often minimised in our chats. If you have the chops for a biopic, you are obviously good at find the heart of a person. Use that in a horror story. Your brain is rarely wrong.
Write the story that will impress strangers & peers will want to help you because they can benefit off your talent. GL!
