Know STRUCTURE! This was told to me by many writers - both TV and Film - over the years. They were all paid and working.
Enter a scene late and leave it early. Know what every character in your scene wants. Learn to write subtext. Only write what moves the story forward.

Not sure if this is for everyone, but for me, I need to outline and know my major plot points.
make sure your characters have a purpose. They should exist to help move the story/characters forward. They should not just be fillers.
The economy of words and script pages are valuable creative real estate. Don't waste them with non-value-added material.
Josiah, the biggest thing I've learned as far as characters and storytelling are concerned: Make doggone sure your characters face real obstacles...real conflicts.
