I haven't seen TAR yet, Yusuf Toropov, but maybe the opening sequence is so much more interesting the second time watching the film because you've seen the movie and you've already invested in the characters and story.
There's actually more to it than that. The two characters speaking are involved in something totally transactional -- they really don't have any relationship beyond that. Gopnik never shows up again in the story. Yet the story does become clearer the second time you watch this film.
