Writing Classroom Scenes

Hey there. How do you guys go about writing scenes that involve a classroom setting? I am trying to write my character into her first day in school, and am trying to decide what sort of things the teacher should logically say. I've decided upon a few things (Making sure everyone is in the correct class. Reiterating the title of the class and what they'll be learning/doing in class. Asking if everyone has taken the necessary prerequisites. Making sure everyone has certain tools they'll need, etc etc) I have a lot of ideas for later lesson plans...Especially those that will pertain to the character development of my protagonist, but am unsure how to begin. I am also currently taking said class so I AM actually noting a lot of what the teacher says and I do... But I wanted to know if you have a certain formula for classroom scenes.

Hi Nadia.... maybe watch "bad teacher" that might help..

Thanks Kimite :).

It is not clear how your classroom scene will advance your story so I suggest you ask your protagonist the following: Did you fall in love with a classmate? Did you fall in love with a teacher? Did you witness an illegal act and are conflicted? Did you learn something that will impact your future? Did you meet someone who will become a lifelong friend? Did you meet someone who will become a lifelong enemy? Did you meet someone who will become a lifelong mentor? Were you bullied? Did you engage in an act of bullying? Did you lose a precious item? Did you find a valuable item? Were you forced to defend your rights? Were you forced to affirm your personal beliefs? Were you humiliated? Were you rejected? I add to the list of movies with memorable classroom scenes: Splendor in the Grass 1961 Blackboard Jungle 1955 Fame 1980 The Substitute 1996 Ferris Bueller's Day Off 1986 Fast Times at Ridgemont High 1982 Mr. Holland's Opus 1986 To Sir With Love 1967 Lean on Me 1989 Hard Lessons (TV Movie) 1986 Rebel Without a Cause 1955 Real Genius 1985 I am sure there are many more fine movies with viable classroom scenes and urge you to do more research. Good luck with your project.

Well I have a great advantage in that I am current taking the same class as my protagonist. I have a better idea of what I should write... Thanks for your input. I wrote this a few months ago when I was completely at a loss for how to begin writing the classroom scenes.

Good. Then you know her goals, obstacles and eventual resolution leading to change as it relates to her education. Best of luck..
