I think one of the biggest reasons the movie didn't do well at the box office is they didn't cater to the game's fan base enough, Ashley Renee Smith. And the movie was competing against Deadpool & Wolverine. Both movies are big action, over-the-top funny movies.

Deadpool & Wolverine hit it with most of its jokes. Played to the fan base. Jokes were aimed at the thoughts fans have had over the years. The injokes worked, but didn't make the non-fans feel left out.
In contrast, Borderlands was absurd, the comedy fell flat at a lot of points. And overall the plot didn't make a lot of sense unless you've already been involved playing the games. And then if you were you felt like they would have been better invested if they followed one of the plots of the games you already played. And overall it probably works just as well on a small TV as the big screen. and when you have a big name cast, you ought to give them lines that work for those actors. What a waste of good talent.
