Yes, yes, and yes to all the points made in this piece. It can't be said enough. If you are getting your social media advice from someone based on their degree rather than their actual involvement and presence in the platforms, then you are likely doing it wrong. Besides Stage 32, what other communities are you engaged in? http://www.experiencetheblog.com/2015/08/burn-it-down-start-from-scratch...
Very interesting story.. thanks for posting :)
Excellent! Thanks for sharing. Someone saying what I bet we've all found to be happening anyway in the last couple of years (and accelerating). Google fake facebook likes, check your Twitter following vs follows and see just how many fall away after mutual likes. (I talk a generality here, some people are wonderful at social media, but most are still self-obsessed). If I can be controversial here for a moment, Social Media is an awful lot of work for low $$$ return vs Google Adwords where you pay your money to position your product (I include art) where people who want it will see it, a much higher more focused return. Having said that for connecting with your customers / Brand Loyalty - Social Media is still very important. EDIT - Bottom line is people come back if you give them what they wanted in the first place (which is nearly always something that will benefit them). END OF EDIT.
Steve, what is it you expect social media to do for you? Nothing, not a career, business, or platform has a magic wand. It's about planning a strategy then following through. Social media is not advertising. It is a community, and without respecting, listening, and really engaging with it, you might as well turn off your computer.

Hi Debbie, I agree it's about community, but I guess I was responding to the article posted which I read as coming from an advertisers/business point of view, and hence I put my answer in $$$. I've made the best connections with people, when generating content they want. Move away from that and the likes and comments fade away. I'm also commenting about many peoples attitude to social media which on the whole is pretty narcissistic. This needs to change so I am agreeing with the article.
