Screenwriting : Exposure by Harold Vandyke

Exposure

Hey, all. Just signed up to Stage 32. I've written approx. twenty feature length screenplays and now face the more arduous task of marketing them. I noticed one can post log lines on one's profile page, but that doesn't seem to be a way to get much exposure. Would be nice if this site had a more public page where one could post so that others in the business (agents, producers) who are looking for new material could peruse the list and request material. What are your thoughts/suggestions?

Amanda Toney

Hey Harold, have you looked at the Pitch sessions with the Happy Writers?

Harold Vandyke

CMJ That was my point about simply posting. Isn't the goal as writers to get our scripts sold and made into movies? I have no problem reading other writer's work, but if we're just sharing and commenting on each other's screenplays...? Shannon, I did have a look at that... another option.

Harold Vandyke

Lisa, it's not about bragging, or making other writers jealous, it's about how dedicated to the craft I am. Now if an agent or producer were to ask, "What else have you got?" I've got plenty of backup. Can't please everyone.

Harold---Love to hear where people are in their writing, if it's one script or 100. Love to hear which pitch sessions you are doing and which scripts you are pitching to which groups. I understand that you feel that being on the Lounge may not get you to where you want to be, but before you decide we are valueless, please be aware that some people here have connections, even if they themselves haven't had movies produced from their scripts. I myself have a cousin who was an screen actress, who is now a music and actor agent, her ex-husband a movie and T.V. producer, not to mention their friends and acquaintances. On the Lounge we have a nice list of published authors. Some people use the site as feed back and morale building.

Hey guys, thanks for the comments. Boomer: that's why I'm here, to get some exposure. I have gotten coverage and notes for some of my work -- a shout out to Danny Manus. Jane: I'm not here to put anyone down. My concern was that if only writers frequent this lounge none of us has much of a chance at being discovered. I'm new here. I'm learning. Lisa: I don't understand your first sentence. Yes, I will be posting loglines and scripts as soon as I finish with some rewriting.

Harold, this is a Screenwriting forum where screenwriters chat about stuff... there are other lounges on S32 but I'm not convinced ANY of the lounges will give you or your scripts exposure in terms of producers looking to make your scripts. But there is the Jobs section on here, worth keeping an eye on and seeing if any of your scripts fit the requirements of the advertisers. For other places and resources to get exposure to your scripts... I've been writing a series of articles over on SimplyScripts on the subject - check out www.anthonycawood.co.uk/articles Oh - and welcome ;-)

Harold Vandyke

Anthony, thanks for that. I'll check out your link.

I wish Stage 32 had an area for people that want to or are open to reading scripts. Might save everyone time and effort in always reading the same requests "please read my script" stuff. For example: Stage 32 Readers - Post your stuff here, it will get read. That way we could move 90% of everything off topic to that area. Just sain ... BTW congrats on writing so much material. Post as much of it as you can here. No harm in doing that.

Welcome Harold! I have some helpful advice for both you and Stacy. The way to create interest and exposure for your writing is to network. Share yourself in the forums. Join the conversation. Offer help. Engage. Stage 32 is not about "self-promotion," but rather about building relationships. No one here likes to be "sold to." That will not work. In fact, it's frowned upon. We are a community. This is about encouraging each other and offering support. There are a lot of generous members. The more you network the more people will visit your personal page and look at your loglines or screenplays. ...The best part, you won't have to ask them to do so. :)

LindaAnn Loschiavo

The best part is .... well, Beth said it best. Please read her comment twice. (N.B.: Here in NYC we are freezing to death. If you folks don't hear from me on Monday, send a St. Bernard dog equipped with brandy.)

Harold Vandyke

Thanks, Beth. That's why we're here. :)

Great, Harold. :) I hope that helped. Also, if you have a request or an idea you wish to propose to the folks who run this site, or to anyone for that matter, you can post those comments in the "Ask Stage 32" section found in the Lounge. :) Best to you!

Hey, Larry. Yes on the multiple genres and usually a mix thereof. I write what I like to see, so I lean towards action adventure, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, thriller. But I do like a mix of character, both male and female, and plot driven stories. I just finished work on a horror, crime, fantasy with a female lead. When I get to posting my loglines, I think I'll include the first ten pages, or up to the inciting incident , then readers can request the rest if they are interested in reading more.
