Onscreen: "Cinderella" - Disney chose a soft Grimm Bros version - instead of the Italian tale, where the father rapes his daughter

For the millions of little girls and boys who will see Disney’s lush, live-action Cinderella this weekend, the studio hasn’t made too many contemporary, sociocultural tweaks to the story. The classic fairy tale isn’t drafted in service of a modern political agenda. Indeed, the new take on an old story doesn’t stray much from Brother’s Grimm convention: a downtrodden Cinderella, beautiful inside and out, but imprisoned by her wicked stepmother, finds salvation in kindness and is ultimately rescued by her prince. ... http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/03/14/what-we-can-all-learn-f...

If you thought the 2015 reboot of Cinderella would be sassy and all-knowing you'd be wrong. And its very traditionalism is its greatest strength.

The Russian tale is very different, Trey. Good link.

Pierre Langenegger

Wasn't Cinderella's feet cut off by one of the stepsisters in the Brothers Grimm version?

LindaAnn Loschiavo

Pierre, the version I am most familiar with is "la cenerentola" (ash child) and a peasant tale "gatto-cenera" --- a gruesome bedtime poem my grandparents recited to us. CINDERELLA is a dirty girl, covered with cinders -- whereas the Italians had the intelligence to call her "ash child" = a child in mourning for a dead mother.

This current release was always meant to be a re-imagining of the Disney animated version, which is EXACTLY what it is. The biggest difference and flaw is that he meets her beforehand, and supposedly nobody (but hm) recognizes her at the ball, then the slipper issue is forced in. Why would the kingdom have to try on the shoe when they all know what she looks like? So in short they took 'cartoon license' with a live action film. It will make (and has) make a fortune, which is what it was designed to do.

Disney set up their business to be a cash cow. They succeeded. Glad to hear someone is making money out there. Family films usually do well.

John Totten

Don't expect rape, incest, nudity, or anything similar with the Disney name attached to it.

Rosa Lafantastica

Except Disney does love killing children's parents off!

Laurie Ashbourne

Yes, Ardua, they certainly do! The reason is two-fold. 1) it makes for less characters (a huge deal when it comes to animation) 2) it's the most direct and universal way to tug at the heart strings of little ones.
