Introduce Yourself : What's your story? by Laurie Ashbourne

Laurie Ashbourne

What's your story?

Hi, Everyone! I've been doing 32 for a long time and loving every minute of it. If anyone needs proof of the power of connections, I've got a truckload. I'm a writer, producer, and story consultant. EVERYTHING starts with a good story, and I'd love to know yours and add to my Rolodex. I'm open to all, but particularly interested in finding a solid roster of folks that make magic behind the scenes (post, vfx, casting, line producers and crew). April is the month when a door always closes and opens to a new season. Come on in!

Heather Ann Steele

welcome

Gabriele D'Ambrosio

Great to have met you here, Laurie.

CJ Walley

If you're thinking of reaching out and connecting with Lauri then stop thinking and do it! She is quite frankly an amazing person with a remarkable background and personally I feel privileged to have her in my network.

Laurie Ashbourne

Aw. Thanks everyone. Been a bit in the thick of it lately but starting to see the clearing up ahead and ready to crash the ST32 server.

Dakota Vegh

My story? I'm an aspiring actor here in Vancouver, I'm writing my own web series which I plan on acting in, producing, directing, and doing pretty much everything I can for it by myself, I'd love to get some tips, tricks, and advice with it. Thanks in advance :)

Spike Thurbon

Laurie was one of my first contacts, here on S32. She has, since, supported me, every step of the way! Thanks, Laurie, you're a star!

Mary Lahti

Hi Laurie, my immediate story is I have to get off this and start my work day but will be back later. Nice to virtually meet you.

Laurie Ashbourne

Spike! I'm so happy for your career and that we connected on here. You are a tremendous testament to how this site has a way of connecting the right people at the right time (and with a smile). Mary, don't let me hold you up, but now I'm intrigued -- do come back and fill us in.

Spike Thurbon

Lots to smile about, Laurie! The power of "Hello" (and a smile) never ceases to amaze me! Wouldn't be here without your support, or S32.

Mary Lahti

Hi Laurie! You certainly are kind and supportive. I hope you are doing well with your creative self. Originally from San Francisco, I moved to NYC about 14 years ago leaving family and friends for a creative life here about to start my new day job in Tower Two of the World Trade Center the week of 9/11. I asked for two more days off to get settled and was staying in a loft next to my potential new office as I thought that was going to be my last day on this earth. Very long story short, I'm still here after being embraced by strangers in New York who helped us and I've been able to perform and enjoy the energy here in this great crazy town. Musical theater is my favorite but also love the film side. I'm always intrigued by what I see filmed and then the end result after editing. I'm also an artist but right now, just mostly do greeting cards. I've started working with creative professionals on a brainstorming process that puts fun into the thought process and gets things flowing. I love being able to help people create and get excited about their projects. Thanks for introducing yourself and it's nice to connect. Oh, and I wrote a blog about the "positive" experiences of 9/11 honoring those people who helped. http://www.marylahti.com/9-11blog_Sept2011.pdf AND ... I at 59, I'm going to Disneyworld for the first time very soon. Can't wait. I'm going to give Goofy a run for his money. Have a great day Laurie (and everyone).

Collier Ward

Hi, Laurie. I'm an architect with a growing fascination with storytelling. The architectural term "story" is a career pivot for me.

Laurie Ashbourne

Wow, Mary - that's an incredible story, thank you so much for sharing it. I'm sure it felt good to get it all down. I commend you for your strength and persistence. New Yorkers are a tough bunch but they will always have each others' backs. I'm glad you found a place to call home and feel that sense of community in such a big place. I'll be at Disney World this Saturday, it's a great place to escape to and be a kid again. Collier! I love that double meaning of story and how cool that it is a literal pivot for you. There's gold in that connection somehow.

Collier Ward

Thanks, Laurie. My firm is called Thousand Story Studio (tagline: "Huntsville Commercial Architecture - One Story at a Time." After a few decades in the design world, I'm working on a novel to launch the storytelling phase of my career.

Carl David

Hi Laurie, I have been working to get my recent book adapted to film. "Bader Field; How My Family Survived Suicide" (Nightengale Press) is the story of our 1960's idyllic American family which was shattered by the shocking suicide of one of my older brothers when I was just sixteen; he was twenty-two. Our journey back to life, filling an overwhelming gap, was an arduous one but one for which we were determined to succeed. I have been using the book as a means to reach out to those on that desperate edge to let them know that they are loved, not alone and that there is help for them, hoping that they will choose to live, not die. I am continually doing television, radio and journal interviews at every opportunity to raise awareness to this devastating act that not only takes that person, but their family as well, for they are left behind in the wake of horror. I have been told by many that this as a film could be the next "Ordinary People." It will save lives and help those who have walked my path. This is my way of paying it forward by taking my darkest days and doing something with them to help others. If you might have interest, I would welcome the opportunity to talk with you. Thanks, Carl

Laurie Ashbourne

Thank you for sharing your story, Carl. It's people who can turn a tragic event into a catalyst to make a difference that truly make this world a better place. By all means shoot me a message here on the site, let me know what's up.

Kate Danaher

Thanks for your interest, Laurie. I have written a script about a young woman who ran for President in 1872. People seem to like the script--it's won 6 awards now-including 3 finalists and 2 semi's, but it will be an expensive film to produce, so still out there looking . . . Here's the title and longline for your rolodex! Victoria of Murray Hill---In 1872, 33-year-old real-life Presidential candidate Victoria Woodhull exposes a rapist. Then, a powerful preacher, with a secret sex life Victoria could reveal, panics and has her jailed three times, causing her political and financial ruin; but the spirited Victoria, along with her rambunctious sister Tennessee, returns blow for blow. Thanks again! Kate

Laurie Ashbourne

Hi, Kate - Thanks so much for sharing this. I absolutely love little gems of history that haven't made their way into the general consensus. (I do think the logline could be streamlined) but the premise has clearly garnered you a lot of recognition. Congratulations on that! Curious as to why you think it is expensive, because it's a period piece? I definitely would keep pushing it out there, the time is ripe for this premise.

Carl David

My pleasure Laurie. Appreciate your reply. I am a 3rd generation Fine Art Dealer in our family owned & operated gallery business (David David Gallery) in Philadelphia, now in its 4th generation with our sons. I originally wrote the book as homage to my Dad (my hero) who died far too early at age 58, only 8 years after my brother took his life. But as the book evolved over the decades it became an inspirational non-fiction family saga which touches deeply those who have read it. It needs to be a film; whether a documentary , short film or major feature it will tell a powerful story that will effect positive change. I am on a mission and will not quit or relent until I have achieved this goal. I will be happy to send you a copy if this is something that could be of interest. Let me know what you think Thanks, Carl

Two main things Laurie - love the positivity and very jealous you can go to Disney world whenever you like! I love Disney world!!!! (Okay, so I have probably been 3-4 times) Anyway, I'm an Irish Australian living in London scribbling on spec. like many lovely people here and for executives and politicians when forced to earn a living. I want to fascinate and titillate the masses with the magic of story. I recently wrote and was 1st AD on a short film for the 48 hour London sci fi challenge. Yes, you get given randomly (you pick folded pieces of paper out of a gift bag) a title, line of dialogue, prop/action and optional theme. You get it Saturday around 11 and have till 1pm Monday, slightly over 48 hours to write, shoot, edit and submit. Best experience ever and when we do an improved sound edit I am going to add it to my profile. I have also joined a comedy sketch meet up and we are writing material to submit to BBC radio and filmed skits. Both of these things have pushed me way beyond my previous experience and comfort zone and I couldn't be happier. The collaboration aspects have been incredibly rewarding so I concur on the power of connections, they enrich the experience exponentially. These few things have popped up recently as I continue to write and pitch on Stage 32 and shoot for the dream whatever it may look like. So fellow dreamers and doers - have at it.

Manley Irish

Hi Laurie. Love to get to know you. With all the great comments here...who wouldn't. Let's make the magic happen!

Laurie Ashbourne

Carl, now that I know you're from Philly that changes everything! ;) Anyway, you have quite a story, I'd be happy to look at it for you (but it may take a while) let me know if it's on the site or if you need to email it, send me a private message. Michelle, an Irish Australian living in London, I cannot imagine how tongue-tied you must get! It sounds like you know how to embrace and live life to the fullest and roll with what may come -- I love it! Best of all to you and your projects. Manley, I'm sure you've heard it before, but I love your name. I'm on board for whatever magic you have brewing.

David Bryant Perkins

Thank-you for the invite, Laurie...www.davidbryantperkins.com

Lonie Nichols

Hah! Laurie, when I first read your comment I thought you meant you were @ 32 YO and holding. '-) I may need a second pair of eyes on one or more of my scripts when the time comes so I will keep you in mind. BTW, are you available to take script ideas and write in the dialogue as a Pay For Hire? I'm so slammed in trying to wear so many hats that I seldom have time for writing anymore... that plus some of my ideas need to be finished from a woman's POV.

Laurie Ashbourne

David! A moog synthesizer and Hitler's astrologer sent my synapses into overdrive. Incredible stuff going on there, what's the latest or the one you are most actively working on? Lonie, if I'm holding it may as well be at 32. I'd be happy to help if it's a fit for us both, send me a private message and we'll see what's best.

Grant Vuille

Thanks, Laurie, for taking an interest in new works. My musical comedy play DOCTOR GEORGE'S MAGNIFICENT needs a producer, director, orchestrator, 16 character actors, & a full production or a staged reading. My script is self-published & available online, or please contact me if interested.

David Bryant Perkins

TEXT MESSAGES TO GOD seems to be the one that is making finalist in the most film festivals & script competitions currently, although HITLER'S ASTROLOGER gets it share. The one I'm finishing now, FLYING TIGER, is at the forefront of mind at the moment...It's nice to meet someone who knows what a Moog is...

Laurie Ashbourne

Hi Mark, the premise of the musician killer sounds great. It sounds like you have quite a roster of material. I'll send you a private message, but since you're new here -- I encourage you to check out the Happy Writers tab in the top menu bar. They have a ton of great opportunities for writers to get their material into the right hands. Email joey@stage32.com and request to be put on that email list for notifications.

Kate Danaher

Thanks, Laurie. I'll streamline the longline. Yes, I think expensive because a period piece. Glad you think the time is ripe for such a premise. A lot of people don't seem to care about that. They just say it is not something that will make money, so no one will do it. I just hope they aren't right. The script is intense, but also funny. I know it would make a great movie, but it all comes down to the business of the thing. Are you from Philly? I am. (I'll have to stop in, Carl, and say hello.)

Laurie Ashbourne

David, you certainly have some intriguing titles that pique immediate interest, best of luck moving forward.

Laurie Ashbourne

I am from Philly, Kate - but I don't get back as often as I should or could. Pay no mind to the naysayers. Female centric (and written by) is the way to go, plus it sounds like a GREAT STORY. Check out Meryl Streep's new initiative: http://www.nywift.org/article.aspx?ID=5503

Carl David

Hi Kate, Yes please do stop in and visit. Generally the gallery is open Monday through Saturday 8-6 until Memorial Day when we start summer hours Monday through Thursday 8-6

Carl David

I've promised myself that this year summer hours may go Monday through Wednesday........

Kate Danaher

Thanks, Laurie. I didn't know about that initiative!! I will check it out. And Carl, I'm heading up to Philly to see an Irish Heritage Theatre show at the Adrienne, so I'll stop in later today.

David Bryant Perkins

If no one has any plans this weekend, the Twister Alley Film Festival looks like the best film ticket in the USA, for $12 you can have all the ribs you can eat, PLUS get to see all the great films Josh & TJ selected - www.twisteralleyfilmfestival.com

Carl David

Kate, look forward to meeting you!

Laurie Ashbourne

I love it. This whole thread has been a lot of fun, and proof there are some original stories out there. Plus I get to support a Philly business vicariously. Magic.

Carl David

Right back at ya! So glad to have connected regardless of any outcome.

Taylor Hay

So great to connect with you. If you'd like to hear more, here is my blog I wrote for Stage 32 last year. Would love to connect with like-minded filmmakers who are interested in producing projects that make a difference. Still making connections and relationships here and am looking forward to working with some Stage 32 members in the future! https://www.stage32.com/blog/Succeeding-Through-Hardships

Laurie Ashbourne

Hi, Taylor! Of course I remember your post. You are a great talent. We just have to align you with the right project, I have every faith in you.

Kate Danaher

Carl, I am dragging with a cold. Not sure I will go to the play tonight, and at this rate I wouldn't make it to your shop by 6. I will definitely stop in though one day soon! Kate

Carl David

No worries Kate, you take care of yourself; feel better. You have an open invitation whenever you are in the area.

Amy Lloyd

Hail to another positive and ground breaking artist- thank you Laurie. I am also a writer/ actress and write and produced a short film in March- "Which is Witch." Hungry to have a new project- ( does anyone else feel like being an artist is a lot like being a 10 year old who is always hungry?) I will play almost anything; tree nymph, Manhattan socialite, and repressed school teacher- love the art, love the artists.

Laurie Ashbourne

I know exactly what you mean, Amy and these days I'm doubly reminded of it as my son is approaching 10. I truly believe creativity provides the sustenance to persevere through anything. I'd love to see your short if it's ready for the world, or send a link when it is.

Amy Lloyd

Being around children is like visiting this world with an alien because kids have this splendid sense of wonder for everything. I love being reminded of that when I am around them. My chubby black cat has just played with a balled up piece of paper for almost twenty minutes, never for a moment losing interest. ( Now if only I could get her to fold laundry...) Yes, I will send you the link to my short film once it is finished. Thank you for expressing interest. More of my work at: amylloydonline.com This has been fun chatting with you, Laurie. Take care. Amy

Taylor Hay

Thank you, Laurie. I'd love the opportunity to work with you!

Tresa Bennett

Looking forward to connecting.
