Here is the synopsis: Literature, as Shakespeare said, “defies time as rocks defy the sea.” Escape Artiste tells a timeless, oft-repeated story of individual survival and self-discovery, as it tracks Rebecca Theodore’s personal journey from ideological slavery to freedom. It is a passage Theodore paid for with her own deep longings and aspirations. The book opens in a packed Toronto, Canada courtroom and then retraces Theodore’s journey all the way back to her primal roots in Bense Village. It addresses themes of sexism, ideology, homophobia, child and domestic abuse and challenges her Adventist church’s doctrines, including its belief in a strict, demanding path to immortality beyond the grave. The book describes how Theodore broke out from the ‘herd mentality’ of her youth in order to define her own cultural script and find her own place in the world.
