Screenwriting Competitions...

I'm contemplating entering Emerging Screenwriters or Final Draft Big Break. Thoughts on either? (I entered Nicholl, Austin, Page, etc). But these two I'm not that familiar with. Anyone have experience with either one?

Jason Dennis

They are not as good as the ones you've entered but I have not heard dirt on either one so you are probably okay. I read for a film festival contest and I will say that Emerging had a script advance that I rated the lowest out of my 37 scripts (it was a very obvious case in a genre I typically favor). So that minor thing turned me off from Emerging. I have observed writers with mediocre to low scores on peer review sites get placement with the two contests you mention, and not sniff much else. So it may be that the two contests are ones that also-rans enter and the competition might be easier. A lot of the very top writers only enter the contests you've already entered, so other contests tend to have a lower bar to clear.

"peer review sites"? Such as?

Jason Dennis

the one I use is Talentville. There's also Amazon and there was Trigger Street, which is now gone.

Thanks James, appreciate the feedback.

Jason, I've joined Talentville as a Tourist, and I've read the FAQ. Now, what don't I know that I should?

Jason Dennis

Start reviewing and if your rating stays above 4.5 for an extended period the benefits will start compounding and you won't have to pay anything.

I'm a volunteer Board member of The CineStory Foundation, a nonprofit which runs a good contest and hosts multiple nonprofit writers' retreats, which I highly recommend. Our 2013 contest winner for the script CAKE, saw his script produced as a movie starring Jennifer Aniston. Director Daniel Barnz met the writer through the CineStory contest. I think it was in 2008 that we partnered with Final Draft Big Break, so I can vouch for them. I haven't heard of Emerging Screenwriters. Check out MovieBytes for pretty comprehensive contest info.
