Hi there! As an new voice actress, I know I need a demo reel to show casting directors, but I don't exactly have many voice acting credits to my name as of yet. What would be the best way to go about doing a character demo when you don't have many credits? I eventually want to make a commercial demo as well. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Katie, I'm a little confused... You're producing a VO demo reel; how is that connected to "not having many credits"? Why is one affected by the other? Want to try to advise, but sorry, kinda confused.

Whenever I think demo reel, I think showing your range. In the demo reels I've heard, the actors tend to use the voice(s) they've used for a character/characters in previous projects to show this. As a new voice actress, I don't have as many characters to pull from. I think my main question is how do I go about showing my range as a new voice actress? I know a couple of people who would most likely be willing to record my reel(s), I would just need a script to work from.

Hi Katie, for a VO demo reel, you can pick your copy from anywhere. You don't have to choose characters you've performed in "previous projects." For live action actor showreels, it's much better if you're pulling video files from movies/TV shows you were cast in, rather than filming from scratch. But in VO, it's normal for the actor and her coach/producer to find copy, perform it, record, mix = create a demo reel. Play to your own strengths.

And choose copy that speaks to the kinds of auditions you'll be up for.
Ditto Regina's comments. If I were looking for a VO actor and listened to reels in order to find one, I'd want to hear as many examples of different voices as possible. In that context, while I may give a bit more weight to voices from a completed project, it will be the overall mix of voices and the nature and quality of the particular performances which would be most important to me.
